Land Award Suit May Wind Up By End of Week

In a Portsmouth Country Club land condemnation case in U S District Court in Concord a slim chance exists the trial will finish this week as witnesses including architect Robert Trent Jones testify. Jones described site conditions in Greenland for an 18 hole course to replace the current 54 year old layout seized for the Portsmouth Air Force Base. Government lawyers may call up to six witnesses over two days. Jones explained design differences caused by Greenland’s heavy clay and glacial till versus Portsmouth gravelly terrain and discussed water needs. The case centers on a $240 000 government offer with Jones estimating replacement cost at $572 600 and a 1954 city assessed land value of $12 000. The water rights dispute with the city was resolved by a waiver setting a maximum value of 2 500, with the council seeking 1 500.
