SEBRING Fla Dec 7 AP Rex Beach nationally known novelist was found dead in his second story bedroom from a pistol shot. County Judge J Howard sn and Sheriff Broward Coker confirmed the death. Beach had suffered a throat ailment for three years and was last seen by nurse Miss Tania Simonia who discovered him in his pajamas. He had been working on a real novel Woman in which he had 27 chapters in progress.
The Portsmouth Chamber retail board announces Santa Claus will visit the business district from December 12 to Christmas Eve. He will be present from 12 am to 6 pm on December 12, 13, and 14, and 11 am to 9 pm December 15–23, with stores closing by 6 pm Christmas Eve. The board urges store hours extended to 9 pm from December 15. Donations to the lighting fund total 2313 dollars, aiming for 2000 more via canvassing. William MacQuatters named February promotion chair, assisted by Pillsbury, Marrs, Aiken, and Beulah Marsh.
A snow storm hit southern New England today with four to six inches predicted by nightfall. Seven Portsmouth representatives met with delegates from shipyard retirement association locals nationwide October 20 and 21.
Greenland man Clyde Sturtevant appeals a reckless driving conviction linked to a fatal 1947 crash that killed Christina Oddy. He argues blood alcohol testing violated his right by forcing testimony against himself while state witnesses cite a blood sample showing intoxication. He was jailed briefly on appeal and later freed on $500 bond.
The New Hampshire Supreme Court denied Leah W. Grierson 37 of Rochester the appeal in a first degree manslaughter case stemming from a Dover death. Atty Gen Phinney sought immediate sentencing in Strafford County Superior Court. Convicted for the Peabody slaying during a 2 1/2 year-old melee in her apartment, she has been on bail. Lloyd R. Hilton of Wentworth Acres was bound over to Superior Court under $1,000 bail for larceny of 250 dollars worth of boiler room equipment from the New Hampshire Technical Institute. Hilton confessed to stealing six pieces intended for a boiler installation and pleaded guilty in Portsmouth municipal court, with three fellow students detained briefly.
In Washington Lt Gen Leste T Graves testified that neither Harry Hopkins nor Henry Wallace sought atomic secrets from Russia. He said Wallace did not pressure him on the wartime atomic project and that no direct contact with Hopkins occurred. Secretary Acheson said licenses approved shipments of uranium compounds to Russia in 1943 and heavy water shipments were licensed.
Greenland names Caswell fire chief of the Greenland volunteers at a regular meeting. Wesley Baht elected president with Phlis Darig as vice president Ever Bennett as secretary and Frederick Baumgarten as clerk. Twenty volunteers will man a newly purchased tank truck and Hoher Hussey named assistant chief. Department sponsored by Greenland Veterans Association under Newington Fire Chief John E. Holden.
