Berlin December 7 Fred Roby 46 was jailed for a year after pleading guilty to assaulting county fiscal agent Alexander R. Thompson while authorities noted a law change raised the penalty. Roby was rearraigned after judge and solicitor found the new rule. held for superior court in 1000 bond. Thompson suffered a severe eye injury when his glasses were broken and remained in St Louis hospital. Roby, a relief client and father of seven, was about to face non support charges when the incident occurred. Judge Rich postponed those charges until Thompson can appear in court. Roby traveled 124 miles to and from the county jail between arraignments.
Boston Dec 7 AP The Coast Guard cutter Tanoa continued to day its quest for an unidentified 340 foot derelict vessel drifting in shipping lanes about 340 miles east of Halifax Nova Scotia Some waterfront sources thought the derelict could be the 5989 ton Manchester Regiment a British steamer abandoned nearby but Coast Guard spokesmen expressed doubt about that theory.
London reports German warplanes raided the Firth of Forth area shortly after noon but were driven off by British fighters. One aircraft was seen hit, with no bombing reported. British sources also cited yesterday’s air engagements over the North Sea in which two Dornier flying boats were damaged. The raid targeted the strategic inlet near Edinburgh and the Rosyth naval base.
Pope Pius XII called priests and clerics who are soldiers to uphold strict moral conduct and piety in the field.
