Allied forces pressed advance on several fronts as the British Eighth Army reached near the Adriatic port of Pescara while the American Fifth Army captured Italian heights west of Mignano. In the Aegean, British submarines sank ships and disrupted supply lines, and heavy fighting continued in Italy with renewed counterattacks repulsed west of Venafro.
The New Hampshire Tuberculosis Fund rose by 342.76 after a tag day in Portsmouth Saturday. Loretta Landry, staff member, announced the total. Forty-two junior high girls sold poinsettia tags across the city led by Mary Shupe with 40.45, Alike Economou 27.97, Barbara Blood 18, and Georgine Marden 16.87. Portsmouth totals were about 90 above the last drive and will be added to the state fund for prevention of tuberculosis.
Roland Labrecque, 25 year employee, died in a blaze gutting the Fownes Paper Box Manufacturing plant in Rochester. He attempted to escape from the second floor and fell near a window. Fire crews fought the flames overnight. cause undetermined. Losses exceed $50,000. Labrecque survived by wife and five children.
Three Exeter hunters recovered an army air force weather instrument in woods near Hedding Campground after a balloon failed at 12 miles up. The parachute descended, spraining one hunter, and the instrument landed in New Hampshire at 3 30 pm. It transmitted data to WBAS Albany before landing. The three plan to return it to Washington D C and a reward of six is offered.
An inquiry by York County Attorney Harold Carroll into the death of 53 year old Frank P. Halliday who drowned off Appledore Island is in progress. Halliday, former caretaxer of the Hotel Oceanic on Star Island for a decade, was recovered by Shoals coast guards after falling from a coal boat. Autopsy by Dr Charles W. Kinghorn and chemical tests on heart and lungs will determine final cause.
An Aleutian base reports a gale blew an outhouse through a hut wall. Lt Gen Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr was absent. The season's harsh winds caused the worst damage from recent blizzards and gales. A record wind of 112 mph was logged last April 8 before the instrument failed and the observation hut vanished from its hill.
Private John J. Foley USA, formerly reported missing in Sicily, has telegram from International Red Cross stating he is a prisoner of war in Germany. Foley, a Portsmouth High School graduate class of 1928, worked 13 years in drafting at Portsmouth Navy Yard and led Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 2. His brothers Pfc Lawrence P. Foley USA and George Foley USNR also serve. Red Cross drive at Elip High School reports 100 percent participation in American Junior Red Cross.
Rumors that Lt. Rita G. Balmer ANC of Hampton was missing since May 1942 were denied. Her parents received official word that she is safe and well in or near the Santo Tomas internment camp in Manila as of September 20, per a letter from George J. McCarthy of the American President Lines aboard the Gripsholm.
London reports from the Swiss Italian frontier claimed Count Galeazzo Ciano, Mussolini’s son-in-law and former foreign minister, was shot by a firing squad for high treason after a grand council vote. The unconfirmed dispatch cites a northern Italian execution and notes deteriorating Italian German ties and a biographer’s fall from grace.
Rochester voters face a Sunday movie question dominating municipal ballots. Mayor Walter H. Wood, a Republican, seeks reelection unopposed. The eight council seats eight school board posts and seven selectmen are on the ballot with a key contest in Ward 3 where Republican Myron St. Jenness is opposed by Democrat Alfred J. Ruel.
