The judge gave two weeks to pay and could wipe records upon graduation. A civil rights suit seeks 25,000 dollars.
Town Council authorized Letendre Construction Co to close for a week starting Nov 3 to speed work on Route 193 underpass. A company spokesman estimated the distance at 180 feet. Town Manager Cecil C. Lancaster said no definite opening date, though a Whitman and Howard representative suggested it might open later today. other reports said it would open Wednesday, but work remains incomplete.
About 50 to 100 Black students seized Harvard University Hall in Cambridge amid claims of race-related demands. Administrators reported no violence as protesters were told they could face criminal trespass charges if they stayed. Los Angeles AP report cites three former followers describing Charles Manson and his commune near Death Valley. They allege black magic held the group together and that Manson taught that all humans are God and devil at once. Prosecutors plan to seek an indictment for conspiracy to commit murder.
AP reports University of Maine students staged a sit in to protest a GE recruiter on campus. A university spokesman said the GE Strike Support Committee planned to occupy part of the East Annex Building, facing potential disciplinary action and possible alternatives to their action. The dean of students would inform them of violations and consequences if they did not disperse.
Peterboro New Hampshire AP report quotes Charles Hamel principal of Peterboro High School saying marijuana is available to students and that there is no doubt kids are using it. Gov Walter Peterson daughter Margaret ls said she does not object to smoking and has friends who use it.
Syrians released two Israeli passengers from the Trans World Airlines jet that hijacked to Damascus last August. The two men, professor Samueloff and travel agent Muallem, were aboard the Rome to Athens to Tel Aviv flight. They are to arrive on the hijacked plane later today in Israel. The bombing damaged the plane but has been repaired. The hijackers seized 29 on the Rome to Athens leg, releasing most passengers and crew the next day while keeping the two men and four Israeli women.
Washington AP reports Acting Senate Republican Leader Robert Griffin said attaching a 15 percent Social Security boost to the tax reform bill could provoke a presidential veto. He spoke as debate opened on the rider, hoping to secure Senate approval amid Democratic moves to back the amendment. The session also addressed a tax exemption end for private foundations after eight years.
