Portsmouth council debates a 11 pm to 7 am winter parking ban from Nov 15 to March 15. Winebaum calls the ordinance absurd and backward, predicting town ridicule if passed. Osborn and supporters say it punishes residents. Whaley Chick Wells and Violette back it for fire safety, while enforcement concerns and a blocked street during storms are raised.
Last night the council debated an ordinance to curb on street parking amid concerns about plowing and safety. Several members urged action citing Dover and Rochester while Winebaum argued against it as unnecessary. A first reading was given to a separate measure banning parking on both sides of Chapel Street from Bow Street to the police station garage driveway.
Greenland asks Portsmouth to include a water line extension in its bid for federal aid to solve water supply issues linked to the Portsmouth Air Force Base. Mrs Laura Cavaretta, 46, was pulled from a flaming Cutts Street living room by Fire Chief Frederick Crompton and firefighters Joseph Hudson and Virgil Bagley after calling for help. She suffered critical burns but was revived with an inhalator and hospitalized in fair condition. The fire, likely started by a cigarette, largely damaged the living room and its furniture.
United Nations sources say Secretary General Trygve Lie dismissed nine American employees for refusing to answer McCarran committee questions on Communist affiliations and subversive connections. The action raises 1952 dismissals to eighteen. Lie warned staff of 3,000 they face the same fate if they act similarly.
