City water commissioner Stephen J. Carney warned of a looming shortage as storage lakes shrink and Croton and Ashokan areas face reduced pressure. To avert a crisis by Jan 1 New Yorkers must cut usage to one billion gallons daily from 1.2 billion.
Ric 2 Hampton contractor Rice and his sister Mrs Marjorie Flint faced Portsmouth municipal court after a visit to inspect cement work in a cafe ladies room. Rice fined 10 and 8.92 costs for drunkenness. Flint fined 10 and 8.62. Rice testified of beer and 'four glasses' after driving to the city. Associate Judge Neukom gave Rice a 60 day house of correction. Flint said the cement work was cracked and approved by no one.
Concord December 6 Adams longtime as Indestructible man governor Sherman Adams sustained a broken left ankle while hiking at Mt Whaleback in Lincoln. He was treated at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital Hanover and discharged from Dick's House infirmary this morning with a walking iron cast. he is expected back at his Statehouse desk this afternoon and will wear the cast five to six weeks.
A Sing Tao Man Po dispatch says Nationalist officials gathered at Chengtu airport for air transport to Formosa as Communist forces advance toward the city after taking Chungking. Retired U S Major General Claire Chennault’s group reportedly chartered for the airlift.
Dr Joseph Rhine of Duke University spoke to an Exeter audience arguing experiments suggest the mind can guide physical objects. He named the field psycho kinethesis, defining it as the effect of mind over matter, and claimed it challenges theories like communism that view individuals as machines.
The Portsmouth Police Relief association proposes one day off in six for all officers pending approval by the Incal police commission and City Council. If adopted without increasing staff or budget, the plan would place Portsmouth ahead of nearby towns with shorter time off. Dismukes USN ret former Portsmouth commandant city councilman and school board member died at the Philadelphia naval hospital after a long illness He was 80 and had 42 years in naval service Transferred from Portsmouth in August his widow also a patient at the hospital Dismukes came to Portsmouth in 1923 and retired in 1925 He lived at 42 Livermone avenue after retirement He later worked in Dover city government and education before returning to active duty in 1942
South Berwick residents discuss a $50000 bequest from the late Elizabeth R Vaughan to fund a recreational center for youth with winter activities. Trustees will control use of principal or interest, with $15000 for Berwick Academy and a $5000 Warner House endowment. Vaughan died October 6 leaving a $2 million estate.
Washington testimony disclosed three shipments of atomic bomb materials to Russia in 1943. Louis Russell, a senior investigator, cited the House committee's evidence while former Air Force officer G Racey Jordan was cited as saying uranium and bomb powder were flown to the Russians in 1944. Patrolman J Harald Trueman suffered a possible knee fracture after a scuffle with Richard T. Taylor, 25, during an arrest by Officers Paul Connors Russell Hughes and Clayton Osbearn in Portsmouth municipal court. Taylor was fined $10 and $84 released after pleading guilty.
