The USS Frank Knox 2200-ton destroyer will be commissioned at the Boston navy yard at 1 pm next Monday. Built after launching Sept 7 1944 at Bath Iron Works Bath Me she will be the first of its class in Boston. Rear Adm Felix Greax will order the pennant raised and Cmdr Joel C Ford Jr will accept command assisted by Lt Com Edmond A Hoggard as executive officer. Mrs Frank Knox of Manchester will attend during a program with remarks.
Five of New Hampshire's 19 counties report no net debts with sizeable surpluses. Merrimack wiped out 99320 debt turning into a 75740 surplus, Rockingham paid off 102917 with a 56718 surplus, Cheshire holds 54322 surplus, Stafford cleared 104623 with a 35080 surplus, and Carroll reduced 63320 debt to a 3856 surplus. The remaining counties show sharp debt reductions.

Greek Premier George Papandreou offered his resignation and proposed a coalition cabinet with center and right wing groups possibly led by Themistokles Sophoulis. In Athens a general strike persisted as ELAS left several police precincts and clashes after the mass funeral for 31 killed. Britain backed Papandreou, pledging to resist a communist takeover and warning it would use force if needed.
Mayor Cherles M. Dale announces a Work Recruitment program by the United States Employment Service of the War Manpower Commission to staff vital war plants in Portsmouth. Officials will seek permission to post posters and distribute handbills and speak with residents to urge cooperation in this urgent effort.
Concord reports the 50th wedding anniversary of Andrew K. Felker, state agriculture commissioner since 1914, aged 75, and his wife, a year younger. Married in Rochester, they lived in Meredith and now run a 160 acre farm in Laconia.

American commanders report the first inland Philippine sea clash ended in a virtual draw as Superforts fail to knock out an aircraft factory in Tokyo. In Ormoc harbor and surrounding Leyte waters a night engagement sinks a Japanese and an American destroyer, with rescue by Catalina planes. More enemy ships and planes are claimed damaged or shot down across the region.
A Legion rally in the Ameri can Legion ballroom kicked off the war bond drive for Frank E. Booma post No. 6. Speakers included Charles M. Dale, Sherman Adams, Lt. D. T. Stafford, James Carroll, Norman Raitt and Charles Conlon presiding. War bond awards were presented to Paul Amazeen, Arma M. O’Keefe and Captain Charles Hand.
Private Arthur Ronald Howe USMC was wounded July 23 in the Pacific area and has since returned to active duty. His parents Mr. and Mrs. Scott E. Howe of 222 Colonial Drive note he received a purple heart and a Japanese rifle with bayonet, bars and Hag. Howe attended Sanbornville schools and worked for Portsmouth Gas and Electric before enlisting in February 1942, overseas in May 1942. His brothers, Sp4 Edwin Eugene Howe USA wounded twice in Italy and France, and Carlton Stephen Howe 2/c USN, now in the South Pacific, also serve.
