Manchester report says a three story tenement incident left John D. Farrell dead on a stairway after striking an unused gas jet and gas filling the hall for five hours. Mrs. Jamies Scott, 59, perished from fumes and her husband was hospitalized in critical condition.
Concord awaits a major defense council gathering as Governor Rinog announces a large meeting Monday. Heads of committees and subcommittees and city mayors will attend with speakers James M. Landis regional civilian defense director and John Haray Northeastern director of social security.

Mrs. Mary E. Lord widow of George W. Lord formerly of Greenland died last evening in Malden after a fall while visiting her sisters. Born July 29, 1862 in Greenland she lived there until her husband’s death in 1934 then resided with her daughter in Malden. She belonged to Greenland Methodist church and is survived by four daughters, several grandchildren, and three sisters in Malden.
Two Coast Guard cutters from Boston pulled the Navy minesweeper USS Casacara off Halibut Point after it had been moved by two Navy vessels. The Cesecara ran aground at 4 10 a.m. and required assistance to refloat.
Rochester City Councilman Llewellyn F. Fernald laments taxis occupy prime parking near the business district. He urges restrictions to free spaces for shoppers while licensing actions for seven taxi license applicants proceed. The council refers Clarence Otis’s license to the licensing board and considers grouping taxi operations.
Charles P. Frost of No 9 Otis Avenue Kittery died suddenly last evening after being taken ill in a restaurant and dying while en route to Portsmouth hospital in a police ambulance. Born April 25 1867 in Eliot he worked as a stone cutter for local monumental firms. Survived by son Edward J. Frost and granddaughter Elma Frost both of Kittery four sisters one brother and a half brother others in Eliot North Adams Ogunquit and Lewiston. member of Naval Lodge 134 AF and AM Kittery Unity Chapter 32 Maine Council 7 RB St Armand Commandery 20 K T Kore Shrine Lewiston.
Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Fernald Plaisted wife of James D Plaisted were held Thursday at 2 pm at Buckminster Chapel officiated by Rev Frederick Ol gen pastor of the Second Methodist Church of Kittery Interment followed in the York Village Cemetery
Dr Eugene H Drake of Portland in the Naval Reserve read a paper on Irregularities of the Heart at a Portsmouth Medical Society meeting held this week at the Rockingham hotel. He is stationed at the Naval hospital Portsmouth Navy Yard. Twenty five members attended including representatives from the naval and army bases.
W James Ward, engineer and superintendent for American Bridge Co, died when a Hartford highway bridge section collapsed over the Connecticut River. He helped supervise construction of Portsmouth Memorial Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. The 270 foot long segment gave way as a crane moved an 88 ton girder, killing at least eight workers and injuring others. divers recovered a body from the submerged wreck.
London notes sent to Hungary Romania and Finland, fighting alongside Germany against Russia, with a midnight deadline. Authorized source calls it Britain’s final effort to stabilize relations and to answer domestic calls for war. Notes sent via US good offices. contents not revealed. Berlin reports Hungary will ignore the British ultimatum and withdraw from the Russian war.
Not an alarm disturbed Portsmouth firemen last night at a celebration for the arrival of a new 817,000 serial ladder truck. Nearly 100 people attended including Mayor Stewart Everett, the entire city council, visiting fire chiefs from Haverhill and North Hampton, Eliot and Kittery Point, and the Portsmouth Harbor defenses. Fire Chief George T. Cogan presided and Willard A. Gray, a long time department member, was guest of honor.

Seabrook Police Chief Ralph W. Eaton was arraigned in Portsmouth municipal court for operating under the influence and drunkenness. Eaton was found not guilty on the DUI charge but guilty on drunkenness, fined $10. companion Arthur D. Kelley faced similar DUI charges, fined $100 and held on $300 bail. Six other speeders in the county paid fines. Also noted, a deadly crash near Dawson, Americus, Ga., left several dead and many injured.
President Roosevelt reviewed Japan's reply to Hull on Indo China troop movements. Tokyo envoys spoke briefly to Hull for 25 minutes, then the document went to the president who planned a luncheon with Hull. No public details were released and diplomats warned the reply may not be decisive.

Two former naval ensigns held at the Portsmouth Navy Yard since August will be released December 15 after Secretary of the Navy Knox remitted unserved portions of their sentences. Pilot Paul C. Brown of Chicago was sentenced to 24 months and passenger Joseph Co. Thompson of Healdsburg California to 12 months after a court martial for a fatal plane incident over an Alabama field.
Governor Blood urged city mayors and town leaders to plan Christmas furlough homecomings for armed service members. He suggested statewide programs on December 7 to show appreciation for soldiers and sailors serving the state, anticipating many leaves during the holiday period.

They acted before volunteer firemen arrived, broom in hand, with Mrs Reeves and Mrs Mabel Pike steering the effort. Fire crews approved the ladies’ work and returned to the station.
