Norfolk England December 4 Sir Eric Teichman veteran British diplomat to the Far East and adviser at Chungking was found shot on his estate grounds at Honingham Hall. Police said the wounds were not self-inflicted. Teichman age 60 had served in China since 1907 and authored travel books. Lady Teichman said poachers had troubled the estate and he went out to investigate. His body lay about 500 yards from the home with a cheek wound. He had been dead for hours.
New York reports severe tobacco and match shortages as wartime controls bite. Government explanations cite many ifs with few buts, noting 742,855 chain smokers confined to strait jackets and predicting continued suffering until 1947 as the industry warns the crisis persists.
