A heavy gale over southern England drives ships to shelter in Dover and swells rivers including the Thames. Plymouth reports the year's heaviest rainfall in six decades. Low-lying east Kent areas flood while fields and lakes fill. prospects of further difficulties loom.
A blaze started from an overheated stovepipe and swept the 2 1/2 story Morang & Robinson building housing Rileigi Theatre radio shop and Ellsworth Red Cross HQ in Ellsworth Maine. The 730 seat theatre and equipment were ruined, losses were estimated at $35,000 with additional damages to a local dealer. Firefighters from Ellsworth Falls aided red tag control.

Six people including a newlywed couple died when a Santa Fe passenger train struck their small car at a crossing near Whittier California early Sunday. The car was hurled into a concrete signal base and five occupants died at once with the sixth dying after extraction. Victims included William DeFore former Los Angeles High School football star Edwin C Bike a USC senior Arlepe Herz 19 and Audna Day 23 all connected to Los Angeles or nearby Centralia Washington. The couple had honeymooned in Los Angeles area after a Saturday night dance turnout.
Keene Dee 17, of 24 Park Avenue, received a buckshot wound in his right leg yesterday while deer hunting with neighbor James Kilroy on West Hill, the opening day of deer season. He was taken to Eliot Community Hospital, with Kilroy firing at a deer as Dee stood in the path. The injured boy, a high school student, had recently been discharged after appendicitis surgery.

Registrars of Voters hold sessions Wednesday with morning and evening periods, urging participation and timely attention to ward lists. Hull England parks committee refuses military training in parks, citing peace efforts.
Sylvester Wiggin, a longtime Amesbury barber born in Stratham, and his wife Mrs. Wiggin observed their 50th wedding anniversary at home on Market Street. Wiggin, 81, has barbered in Amesbury for 61 years and remains active. Mrs. Wiggin, born Caro Crowell in Jackson, Maine, came to Amesbury at 15. They were married December 1, 1879 in Amesbury with Rev. James N. Noyes officiating.
Associated Press reports 69 crippled children ages four months to 15 years were evacuated from the Hospital and Home for Crippled Children when a fire broke out in the X-ray film storage area. Fire smoke filled corridors but no one was harmed. Swift removal prevented loss of the building.
The fishing schooner George K with six crew members sank after a northwest blizzard. They were rescued by the steamer Baufblein near 47.55 N 61.55 W while other schooners from St Johns had sailed for Bong Vista Bay. Government ships Hope and Neigle searched for unreported vessels as details remained unclear. Meanwhile a note cited that many English girls prefer office work due to shorter hours.
