King George VI orders all British male subjects aged 20 to 23 to register for military service, with 250000 expected to answer. Rev. H. Hawthorne Benedict, pastor of two Seabrook churches, sent funds to return his wife and son George from Poland where destitute conditions were reported. State Department records say they are held captive in Warsaw by German invaders. No word on daughter Agnes or her fate.
The French Senate approved extending Premier Daladier's decree ruling powers for the war. The vote was 259 to 23 after the Chamber of Deputies had already passed the measure. This action grants him authority to govern by decree during the conflict.
Russian paratroopers reportedly seized Petshamo the Finnish Arctic port after bombing raids that set fires in the town. Refugees described the capture of the monastery at Petchen gs and the burning of Liinahamari while Soviets bombed Salmi Jervi to hinder refugee crossings. About 600 refugees fled across the Pasik river into Norway as fighting continued.
Moscow reports the Soviet government seized the Finnish legation telephone and withholds passports for departure. Officials could not say when staff would leave for Helsinki amid talk of possible mission denial until Soviet consulate staff reach Moscow. Tass claims Red Army command ordered the invasion after three Finnish border attacks.
Berlin dispatch reports from DNB the German news agency that from the war start to Nov 28 a total of 194 vessels totaling 735,768 tons headed for Britain have been sunk by U boats or mines. It cites 162 ships confirmed sunk, 52 neutral, totaling 639,689 tons, with 32 more ships listed by non German sources totaling 39,321 tons. The note says 150,367 tons were tankers and the average ship size is about 7,500 tons.
Russia’s armed forces bombard Finland from Arctic Ocean to the southwestern shore with aerial bombing and incendiaries. A large bomber squadron hit Helsinki for the second day, setting the city ablaze while Finnish reports say many raiders were shot down. At least fifty killed in yesterday’s attacks, with broader casualties undetermined. A new Finnish government formed after Cajander’s resignation, with Risto Ryti naming a cabinet. Erkko and Cajander were dropped. Soviet forces also advanced along the eastern frontier and around Lake Ladoga toward the Karelian isthmus.
Rufus E. Ross retires after 26 years as national secretary treasurer of the Railway Mail Association. John J. Kennedy of Allston Mass., elected in a runoff, becomes successor and has been in the city to assume duties. Kennedy has long served the organization, including presidencies of the first division and the Boston Branch, and has held multiple delegate and officer roles across conventions.
