In Woonsocket Rhode Island Joseph Costa 21 told editor Mileen Hurley of the Woonsocket Call he wants his engagement announcement and his photo included on the page. Editor Bill Crouse said it’s the first time the paper ran a man’s picture on the engagement page.
H Dayton Benway 68 longtime Bridgton town manager and former Old Orchard Beach selectman died at home Tuesday night. A Cornish New Hampshire native he led Bridgton from 1955 to 1970 and served as a past president of the Maine Town and City Managers Association. He also ran a grocery and hardware business in Old Orchard Beach.
Legal papers were served on the Portsmouth School Board and Supt. James J. Cusick after a suit filed by NH Legal Assistance Office for high school students Evan C. Maya and Calvan Vail. The students seek a preliminary injunction in Concord federal court on Sept 6 at 4 p.m. over distribution of The Strawberry Grenade on school property, denial of an appearance by Socialist Workers candidate Andrew Pulley during primary campaigns, and policies on student suspensions. The case argues a civil class action to protect First and Fourteenth Amendment rights to distribute literature, invite speech in school, and due process in suspension procedures. In other news, a vacancy for Little Harbour School principal drew 11 inquiries, with a $14,300 to $17,600 salary. the final vocational education director candidate visits. JFK Recreation Center use by PE classes was approved with time restrictions. driver education will mirror last year’s plan plus a push to raise self-sufficiency given higher state per-pupil funding.
In Franconia New Hampshire two men were injured when a tractor trailer struck a bridge causing it to collapse. The truck bed dragged across the span trapping the rig. John Sousa and Joseph Evans were hospitalized with injuries while the bridge was cleared and traffic rerouted.
Democratic hopeful Roger Crowley accuses opponent Maobert Raiche of backing sales and statewide property taxes to fund schools and vows to veto any sales or income tax. He would freeze hiring and cut state employees by about 500, with raises for lower paid workers. Raiche proposes a deferred tuition plan to help students pay for college.

County commissioners had urged a police panel to determine who damaged the facility during the search.
