Correction Department refuses to negotiate with Walpole State Prison inmates involved in a work stoppage after 250 prisoners refuse to report to jobs citing alleged guard beatings. Inmates say guards hauled them from cells and beat them, prompting the dispute.
Massachusetts first lady Kitty Dukakis was chosen Monday as vice chairwoman of the National Governors Association arts subcommittee, the first time a governor's spouse was elected as a voting member. New Jersey Governor Brendan Byrne, subcommittee chair, called it a historic move.
In Jacksonville Bradford Kearley a 20 month old boy with bone marrow cancer and pneumonia lies near death. His condition worsened Monday at Baptist Medical Center with body functions not as strong as they were over the weekend.
California legislators move toward a $75 per income taxpayer bonus funded from surplus after Proposition 13 revenue loss. The Senate passed the bill 33 to 0, sending it to the Assembly and then to Governor Brown for final approval. Brown had previously warned of tax increases tied to the Proposition 13 cut.
A Portsmouth police cruiser involved in an investigation collided on Route 1 near Kittery injuring seven people. Driver Jerry A. Hinton, 32, and three others from Portsmouth and Kittery were hospitalized with one 12-year-old girl kept for observation. Amount of damage was $4,000.
