On August 27 in Bostos Johnnie Nelson, winner of fifteen straight races, lost a twenty mile meter paced event at the Shoe City oval to Burns W Peirce. Nelson led by half a lap in mile eight when his pace faulted and he quit on the fifteenth mile third lap. Peirce led by 234 laps afterward. Nelson’s time for the portion completed was 11 minutes 56.5 seconds.
A deputation of Transvaal Germans arrives to complain to the German foreign office of cruel treatment in Johannesburg. They allege 400 Germans were arrested and sent to Flushing aboard a British steamer, landless and penniless, seeking damages for loss of property.
