A Lewiston mechanic named Dominique E. Dosti was killed when a Lewiston Crushed Stone Co truck driven by Arthur Martin went out of control and crashed into a Lewiston residence. Passengers Paul Belanger and Lorepno Parent were hospitalized with injuries, while a fourth passenger Ray Rondeau escaped unharmed as a side door opened.
Seco Me Aug 24 Charles Ouellette 23 a partially crippled sapper dived to rescue his 11 year old son Joseph Ouallene and Raul Lavigne 11 from dangerous currents near a large oil wharf. His body was recovered by firemen after more than 30 minutes of unsuccessful resuscitation. He leaves a wife and two sons.
Newharsport Mass August 24 A mother Mrs Chester L Pape rushed to her sons room Sut ton 1B and found him dead with a 22 caliber rifle shot through the head The boy had played with an orchestra at Rye Beach New Hampshire but had not lately been employed there.
Lawrence Massachusetts August 24 1947 a 2 year old, Paul Silva of Lowell, was treated at Burke Memorial Hospital after a thumb laceration nearly to the bone from a halter rope fall. Police cleared a 30 mile route from Hampton Beach New Hampshire to back to the hospital where he was transferred due to a fire outbreak near Haverhill.
Thousands witnessed the Tercentenary parade in Hampton and Hampton Beach as a long procession from Hampton Center to the shore featured 18 floats and bands. State police escorted the march with officers from Portsmouth Durham and North Hampton joining the escort.
Internationally known flyer Air Commander Frank Hawks and J Hazard Campbell were killed or injured when a Gwinn Aircar crashed near Aurora. The craft struck power lines, burst into flames, and a fire extinguisher exploded while bystanders attempted rescue. Hawks died later in a Buffalo hospital. Campbell was seriously hurt after the short flight on the Rogers estate.
The Elmpion tercentenary program marked Old Home Day with a morning on Mesting House Green and luncheon at Ashworth Hotel in Hempton Beach. Gov. Charles F. Hurley and Congressmen Charles W. Tobey attended as speakers, stressing American heritage and vigilance against subversive forces.
William Besseling a 72 year old Mattapan Mass. resident was located near Meredith Neck in the Lake Winnipesaukee area after volunteers and authorities conducted a lengthy search that began Monday evening and extended over miles. He had been missing for hours and was bruised from his harrowing experience but was found in fair condition. Police and volunteers coordinated under Police Chief Norman Martin with a group led by Charles Weeks aiding in the operation.
Edith Talbot, 74, of Melden, Mississippi, was missing after spending the night on a mountainside during a storm. A 19 man posse led by Constable Robert Gilpatrick found her at around 1 AM as she faced exposure but was deemed safe. medical notes say effects may take 34 hours to fully surface.
Wichita, Aug 24 AP Wichita eliminated Lisbon Falls Maine from the national semi pro baseball tournament with an 11 to 1 victory. Byron Chody of Wichita struck out Giezen mien. Lisbon Falls' first baseman Waitkus homered in the ninth.
William G. Walden of Pinsfield Massachusetts, a former Exeter resident, was located in Florida and arrested after a warrant for larceny of 57009 from his late wife’s estate. He waived extradition and faces Massachusetts custody. Walden previously was convicted in Rockingham County Superior Court of defrauding a Derry woman of 8200 and sentenced to prison.
Norman Chase and Walter Stevens of York were injured when their car rolled over several times at York Village. Chase was taken to York Hospital with a broken arm and bruises. he returned home after treatment.
