The weather bulletin from Washington on August 24 reports rain tonight for New Hampshire with Friday partly cloudy conditions after morning rain in the far north. Temperatures are not expected to change much.
Oklahoma City August 24 a federal grand jury swiftly indicted 14 men in the Charles Urschel kidnapping case. The blanket indictment names Harvey Bailey Albert Bates and George Machine Gun Kelley among principals and places the ransom at 200000. Bail and Bates face separate murder charges in Kansas City.
The hurricane born in the Caribbean stalks the eastern seaboard with high seas and floods. At least a dozen dead and multi‑million in damages are reported as resorts are destroyed and communities marooned. The Madison with 109 aboard reaches Norfolk after two SOS calls. two other large vessels missing. Coast Guard searches for Veedol and others as Maryland and Virginia towns plead for aid.
York Beach Maine August report states Capt Harold Hutchins keeper of Boone Island lighthouse, missing since Sunday, was found by Maine state police in Bangor after a description led authorities. He had been on furlough with family and may have suffered mental trouble following a sunstroke.
A lumber shanty and telegraph pole were blown across the Erie tracks near Belleville New Jersey nearly derailing a train before two boys flagged it in time. A man was electrocuted at Atlantic City New Jersey after stepping on a fallen wire. The Crescent Limited on the Southern Railway from New York to New Orleans derailed near Washington when a bridge over the Anacostia River collapsed in heavy rains. Two engine men died, others were reported killed or injured as cars plunged into the swollen stream and waterlogged embankments.
