Seven Hurt as Train Rams Car in Portsmouth
Seven people including a 16 month old boy were hospitalized after weekend accidents. The most serious crash occurred near the Barberry Line railroad crossing in Portsmouth when Dana J. Freeman narrowly escaped death as his car was struck by a train traveling from Boston. The car was demolished and pushed along the tracks for over 100 feet. Police and railroad workers described extensive wreckage as the train, traveling about 45 mph, went downhill. Several others suffered minor injuries in related crashes on Route near the Portsmouth line.

Banker Rescues Four Stranded In Local Harbor
A Portsmouth banker KB Curtis Matthews aided four youths whose outboard boat foundered off Kitts Rock in Portsmouth harbor. The group aged 14 to 22 included Henry A. Dewhurst and William Dewhurst of Kittery and Haverhill Mass, George A. Leavey, and Albert A. Polgin of Portsmouth. They were hauled aboard the Ghocorus III and later to a coast guard craft for immersion shock treatment at New Castle station before release.

The British freed Frans Erdman head of the criminal division of eastern Berlin police, arrested at a boxing match for abduction and presumed authority. Tension eased briefly as Russians crossed into the American sector and seized a German photographer, the tenth such seizure since Thursday. Americans released include Thomas P Headen deputy head of information services in Berlin, abducted at Potsdam Platz, plus Lt. Sherman Turner and Roland Myers seized 18 days earlier after crossing into the Russian zone at Mellrichstadt. The western police say Russian soldiers again invaded the American sector to seize the photographer amid ongoing civil war between east and west police. Headen was turned over to U S Army officers.

False Alarms Ring In Acres Fire Crews Twice Called
The Portsmouth fire department responded to two false alarms in Acres during the weekend. On Saturday a prankster triggered Box 114, and on Sunday night shortly before 11 the Box 121 alarm rang. Neighbors and firefighters found no one present at either scene.

Six Area War Heroes Arrive for Reburial in Portsmouth
Six Portsmouth area World War I heroes arrived in the United States from European cemeteries aboard the U S army transports Lawrence Victory. They will receive military funeral services in their home towns. The list includes Private Gordon Renner and Howard A Hunt among others. Renner, a national guard veteran killed Armistice Day 1944, is survived by his mother several sisters a brother and two daughters. Survivors include Mrs Maude G Renner and Mrs Doris Lazodzinski among others. Private Hunt was a three-sport star at the local high school.
