In Saigon AP reports the United States is launching scores of pilotless drone aircraft to spy on North Vietnam, with some units carrying bombs, according to senior officers.
Senator George McGovern arrived in Austin to honor former president Lyndon B. Johnson and seek unity with the late era leader. The visit focuses on bridging divisions within the party and affirming shared goals for the nation.
An aide to Gov. Sargent said General Dynamic's Quincy Shipyard is favored for a Department of Defense contract to build two submarine tenders and should win by month’s end after talks with Secretary of the Navy John Warner. At the same time, a North Fairfield woman, Shirley Ann Thayer, 28, was killed when her car was struck broadside by a Central Vermont locomotive at an unguarded crossing in Georgia near St. Albans.
Edwin B. Leeman, 78, and his wife Laula, 82, were found shot to death at their home near South Harpswell Maine. State Police reported the double tragedy occurred when he killed his wife and then took his own life. A son living nearby discovered the bodies this morning. In a separate report from Thomaston Maine Acting Warden Rob ert K Kennedy said inmates at Maine State Prison’s maximum security segregation unit have been acting out since Sunday demanding privileges, with several destroying mattresses and furniture.
Sylvia Chaplain accused Chester Merrow of outdated ideas and poor responses to voters' problems and urged a public debate. She seeks the Democratic nomination for the First District primary on September 12 to face Rep. Louis C. Wyman in November.

An explosion at a customs post in Newry on the Belfast Dublin highway killed six people. Two dead were guerrillas who brought the explosives. a third man fled the scene. Two others were seriously injured. The toll raised Northern Ireland’s death count to 524 in three years of violence. Security sources speculated the guerrillas used nitrobenzene.
