A Portsmouth city mosquito nuisance grows as mosquitoes swarm Elwyn Park and salt marshes. Sanitary Inspector Mayo plans immediate spraying while funds and tides hinder control. Public Works chief Stevens balks at costs and urges residents to act, city manager Fenwick unsure.
Eisenhower won the invitation clash with Adlai Stevenson over which day they would address the National Plowing Contest in Kasson Minnesota. Eisenhower would speak Sept 6 while Stevenson declined Sept 5 due to prior commitments. Stevenson later backed the national ticket as Mississippi Democrats moved to place an independent Eisenhower slate on the ballot.
Sen Richard Nixon the Republican vice presidential candidate arrives in Hampton Beach for a 2 pm policy address at the Casino bandstand before about 20800 spectators. He will attend a luncheon at Asheworth Hotel and a 11 am press conference at Lawrence Hotel before a Boston visit.
Japan-based U S Superforts bombed a large grenade factory at Nakwon near the Manchurian border, employing 2,000 workers. The plant, 3 miles south of the border, was one of 78 U N Command targets announced in advance. It was the facility’s first hit.
LYNMOUTH England Police warned that the toll from Saturday's flood on England's Southwest Coast may rise to 90 dead. Official figures listed 13 known dead 28 missing presumed dead seven bodies recovered identified. Unofficially police had no word on at least 50 more holidaymakers.
The Office of Price Stabilization outlined plans to post dollar and cent price ceilings in more than half of the nation’s 500000 grocery stores by Oct 1. Posters will show about 300 major items, reviving the World War II era uniform pricing program to aid consumers and ease grocer workload. Trials in Jacksonville Fargo and Fresno boosted support for nationwide rollout.
Vernon Charette of Waterbury Connecticut, former Lincoln resident, is charged with assault with intent to murder after a lethal gun battle at the Indian Head cabin colony in Grafton County. His brother Wallace, 23, died in the exchange. proprietor Huon, 45, of Exeter, was wounded. Charette pleaded not guilty and was bound over to the September term. sheriff hints at new developments in the case.
The United States Education Department says Portsmouth is entitled to 77793 in federal school aid, but the city plans to use about 65000. Government calculations assume 131 students at Wentworth Acres, not 208, risking a lower share. ORS plans a public hearing Sept 22 at the Community Center to determine a roll back date for rent ceilings and explain the Local Rent Advisory Board roles.
City Council approves first reading of an amendment to permit construction of an Internal Revenue Service office building at 552-606 State St. A public hearing is set for September 8. The change, backed by the Planning Board, may include off street parking and relies on property owned by John H. DeCourcy.
In Washington, Sen McCarthy’s bid to postpone pre-trial testimony by Paul G Hoffman in a $2 million libel suit against Sen Benton was denied. Judge Matthews overruled the delay request citing illness and conferencing needs, while Benton’s attorney Kiendl pressed to use Hoffman's testimony to counter McCarthy's Senate attacks on Gen. George C. Marshall.
President Truman ordered release of a long secret FTC report on international oil deals amid new charges of a cartel siphoning U.S. foreign aid. The disclosure spurred a federal grand jury probe into alleged price fixing and monopoly practices involving seven major oil firms including Standard Oil of New Jersey and Royal Dutch Shell. Senator Sparkman chairs a subcommittee investigation and expects the 10 chapters to be printed and distributed soon.
Portsmouth officials reported the police department may move into the new Penhallow Street station by January 1, 1953. The council’s jail committee, led by Harry Winebaum and Nathan H. Wells, sought authority to proceed with jail work, furniture, locks, and a bank. Bills totaling 10,438 for station work were held pending committee approval.
The city awarded three water mains and sewer contracts with work to begin within days. Frederick Construction of Dorchester to build the Elwyn Road water main and another on Lafayette Road. E Del Duca of Methuen to install mains on Jones Avenue, Pearson Street, Lafayette Road to the transmitter, and Wentworth Road, plus Hillside Drive and Greenleaf Avenue sewer projects. Landers and Griffin of Portsmouth bid $25,232 for Richards Avenue and Miller Avenue sewer ring. City faces funding questions with $29,235 sewer bond balance and possible extra funds if needed.
The City Council postponed a second reading of a 150000 bond issue to fund additional off street parking. A ruling from the city solicitor on the legality of a recent Chamber of Commerce requested hearing is awaited. If illegal, arguments from the second hearing may be struck from the record.
Ten Wentworth Street residents petitioned the City Council for improved water main facilities and the request was referred to the city manager and public works superintendent for report. Petitions for sewer connections were filed by Thomas and Mary Loughlin of 254 Essex Ave and Mrs Mary Rafferty of 239 Essex Ave, referred for report. A further sewer connection request by William C O'Brien at the corner of Cutts Street and Cutts Avenue was sent to the city manager and public works superintendent for report. The Council offered free use of the South Playground and rights to the Big League baseball playoffs.
The Board of Registrars opened one of four sessions today to revise the check lists. The board will meet Saturday Monday and August 30 with sessions from 9 a.m. to noon 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
