Count Folke Bernadotte told the United Nations that the Jerusalem conflict between Jews and Arabs is spiraling. He urged prompt action to avert a wider war, noting both sides have ignored UN authority and demilitarization hopes for Jerusalem seem unlikely.
President Truman stated the United States will not send troops abroad except as part of a United Nations force. He noted UN observers are in Palestine and more may come, while a $100 million loan to Israel was under consideration by the Export-Import Bank to support development and reconstruction.

LAKE ORION Mich Aug 19 AP Dick Wells a commercial airlines pilot says he saved 567 by ordering a new Studebaker in London and picking it up there. Sadebaker Corp officials in South Bend Ind confirmed the tale but deny any sale below U S list price. They say the model Wells sought lists at 1861 here and abroad plus a 14 foreign handling charge. London dealer pricing and display availability are questioned as unlikely factors.
The National Labor Relations Board under Paul M. Herzog ruled that hiring halls run by the CIO National Maritime union are illegal under Taft-Hartley. The decision sets broad precedents, targets unfair labor practices, and signals injunctions could follow in other regions. Negotiations were set to resume in Cleveland as cases may reach the Supreme Court.
Mrs. Evelyn Stephanis, 60, of Mast road, Epping, was found dead in her dooryard yesterday afternoon. Dr. John W. Blaisdell ruled heart failure. Neighbors and relatives alerted authorities. husband Louis Stephanis was at work in Baden. She had lived in Epping about two months.
Two Methuen retired teachers, Miss Alice Turner and Miss Alice Chose, were injured in an automobile accident in Durham last night. Turner has a fractured right foot and facial bruises while Chose suffers a fractured shoulder jaw and little finger with facial bruises. They were to be transferred to Lawrence General Hospital. Durham Police Chief Louis P Bourgoin is investigating.

Hurricane hunting planes went out again today to explore a wave of squalls and showers in the West Indies. Chief Federal Storm Forecaster Grady Norton said the condition showed a positive circular movement that could become a tropical disturbance.

A Rockingham county superior court hearing will examine a petition by Charles P McCarthy of Raymond to halt a $25000 annex to the town consolidated school. He claims the school board acted without competitive bidding as required last year. Mrs Mildred R Giptill the chair denies the board acted illegally.
The nation mourned Babe Ruth at a requiem high mass in St. Patrick's Cathedral New York. About 6,000 inside and 50,000 outside. Gov. Dewey and Mayor O Dwyer attended as honorary pallbearers. Ruth died Monday night at Memorial Hospital aged 53 after cancer.
The army and air force announced a draft deferment program for University of New Hampshire ROTC students. Eligible 18 to 26 year olds must register, remain in good standing academically and militarily, attend summer camp, and sign to accept a commission if offered while serving at least two years as an officer. Those enrolled in the advanced course before June 24, 1948, and in good standing automatically defer until course completion.
J. O. Barthelemy of 726 Lafayette Toad reports losing diving equipment valued around 200 dollars Sunday from salvage ship Ruth and Margaret while attempting to salvage manganese cargo from the sunken freighter Wyoming. The 32 year old vessel sank en route from Woods Hole to Gloucester for engine repairs. three crewmen were rescued by a Gloucester craft.
The USS Flying Fish SS 229 from New London will depart Portsmouth after over three months of overhaul for a two week training cruise to Quebec and Halifax Nova Scotia. It would be the first fleet submarine to reach Quebec and the first to travel there since 1929. Expected home arrival is Labor Day.
Washington officials prepare a formal rebuke draft for the Soviet Union over charges against the United States in the case of refugee Russian schoolteacher Oksana Kosenkina. Secretary Marshall signaled the charges are unsupported and refuted by Kosenkina’s dramatic escape from the Soviet consulate in New York.
