In Shanghai on the International Settlement border a British sergeant, W. L. Kinloch of Scotland Yard, used a stub machine gun after being shot in the back by Chinese police. He killed two Chinese officers and wounded six others before he fell. Both sides mobilized forces and protested jurisdictional violations.
Secretary of War Woodring returned from his second Panama trip in New York today, praising Canal Zone defense progress since 1996. Accompanying him were Maj. Gen. Sunderland, Maj. Gen. Maujorghe, Lt. Col. Colton, Maj. Persons, and Capt. Griffiss of the Air Corps.
Gardner Massachusetts August 194P two Gardner girls Rita Couture 19 and Alberta Cychel 20 were killed when the car they rode in crashed into a water trough during a police pursuit. The driver Joseph Wojtukiewcz 20 also of Gardner was injured with a brain concussion but expected to recover. The vehicle was reported to have been without lights as the pursuing police car followed.
Concord Aug 19 AP reports Warden Charles B Clarke will seek a maximum two year addition to Louis Couture s sentence from the Merrimack County Superior Court. Couture 29 escaped from state prison near Norwich VI and was recaptured. He had been serving one to two years for larceny at Lancaster and fled May 30 while employed as a trusty outside walls. His case goes to court in October.
Fox Lake Illinois August 19 AP two pilots William Solberg 40 and Homer Seavey 24 started a 55 horsepower Cub from the lake airport to set a new endurance mark seeking 243 hours 46 minutes refueling from a motorboat skimmed over the water at 40 miles per hour with a cable link as contact the Moody brothers recently beat the old record by 126 hours 3 minutes.
Helena Yoores a 19 year old Brooklyn Dies Committee witness faced a wary day as an illegible shorthand note allegedly left by a stranger was handed to her via an eight year old. Attorney Jack Leiberman said the message unclearly read either I love you or goodbye to life. Miss Vooros testified in Washington about leaving a German American Bund camp over un American activities. Little chance of further investigation, Leiberman added.
