Spotlight magazine relaunched with reader input and redesign

Howard Altschiller introduces the redesigned Spotlight magazine in todays Herald. A March gathering at the Blue Mermaid in Portsmouth drew Seacoast readers and opinion-makers to shape the arts weeklys future. The group included musicians actors poets writers and local proprietors and patrons.

Turning point vigil supports Cindy Sheehan in Portsmouth

More than 100 people gathered in Market Square to back Cindy Sheehan, mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, as part of 1,627 nationwide vigils organized by MoveOn.org and Democracy for America. Supporters praised her stance and urged an end to the war.

Dover Embraces Move of Portsmouth Children's Museum

Dover residents urged quick action at a public hearing as the City Council approved a 7-2 lease for the Portsmouth Children's Museum to relocate to the Butterfield Building downtown. Mayor Myers praised downtown waterfront development and a hoped for trickle-down boost to the entire community. Two opponents asked for a one week delay to seek answers about the lease.

Vandal who desecrated statue sought again in burglary case

Kenneth Joslyn, 21, of 89 Main St Portsmouth is wanted on an arrest warrant for the theft of cash and checks from Bethel Assembly of God at 200 Chase St. Police linked him to a 2004 church vandalism at St Catherine of Siena, where the Madonna of the Streets statue was stolen and displayed at the rectory. He faces an 11 month remaining sentence if convicted in the Bethel case.

Reading and math scores rise at three Seacoast high schools

New Hampshire state test results show gains at Portsmouth Winnacunnet and Exeter high schools in 2005. At Portsmouth High School 10th-graders, 79 percent reached Basic or above in math and 84 percent in reading, up from 2004. Winnacunnet posted higher Basic or above rates in both subjects, with 71 percent in math and 74 percent in reading.
