Worker at Air Base Killed by Flying Rivet
A 29 year old Portsmouth Air Force Base construction worker from East Boston Mass died at Portsmouth Hospital four hours after a rivet discharged from a pistol type stud driver struck him in the head. The accident happened while erecting window blinds in an airmen barracks steel frame. The rivet pierced his skull and brain and lodged behind his left eye. The gun had been primed with a 22 caliber charge and discharged accidentally. The worker, employed by Rit-Mar Shade and Screen Co Boston, was working alone at the time. nearby colleagues heard a gunshot and a thud. The mishap occurred between 2 30 and 2 45 last afternoon.
