EW YORK Aug 18 AP reported Laughlin the nation’s largest steel company told fact-finders profits must go to plant improvements. Chairman and president said this is the only sound policy for company stability and future productivity. Union refers to a 30 cent package rise including wage and pension boosts as a possible demand.
Portsmouth naval shipyard is under study by the Atomic Energy Commission as a potential site for defense work. Senator Tobey said AEC Chairman Lilienthal is gathering Navy department details on the yard’s capacity to meet commission needs and may consider employing the facility through field offices and contractors.

Concord Aug 18 AP Governor Sherman Adams met Dickinson for under an hour and would not comment on the status of the one year old suspended highway chief engineer. The meeting followed a recess after Dickinson and officials were asked to answer evidence from attorney general Phinney. Lorimer said the governor had a speaking engagement delaying the afternoon conference. Morse of Haverhill, Dickinsons former partner, is involved.
Yale scientist rejected WCTU claims of a tie between Yale alcohol studies and liquor interests. The university officials said the alcohol section remains neutral, focusing on social and medical aspects of alcoholism rather than endorsing prohibition.
A seven year old Hampton boy nearly died when he slipped on a piano stool in his parents basement and his neck became caught in a rope. His mother heard his screams and freed him, with no serious injuries reported.
Helsinki Aug 18 AP reports police and striking lumberjacks clash in the opening skirmish of a Communist strike offensive. Government official says the move aims to seize power in Finland. The brief notes authorities and workers tightening tensions amid the unrest.
President Truman blamed Congress for lifting federal rent controls in about a third of areas still under regulation. He said Congress failed to provide enough money to enforce the rent control law as Housing Expediter Woods outlined plans to decontrol border areas where adequate housing exists or will soon be available. Officials would not specify which regions would be affected, with Portsmouth area in New Hampshire seen as a probable exception.
Eight people were injured in a head on collision on Lefayette road near Breakfast Hill. Mrs Rose DeBero 50 of Boston and Thadeus Smith 20 of Portsmouth were drivers. DeBero suffered fractured leg and head injuries while Smith had minor cuts. Several passengers including Ruth Goodnow Constance Lathrop Ida Catalfo and Georgia Bsgiian were treated for facial injuries jaw lacerations and head injuries. Two sailors Donald Luckheart 39 and Robert Lucher 19 were wounded lightly and sent to Portsmouth naval hospital.
Concord August 18 AP the reorganization commission recommends creating a new state tax department to centralize tax collection. The governor and council gain appointive powers, the supreme court loses tax appointment authority, and the tax commission shifts to admin duties with new court of tax appeals.
Belgrade reports that Marshal Tito secured U S approval to buy an American steel mill and possible World Bank loan, aimed at tightening Yugoslavia's stance against the Moscow led Cominform. The $3 million mill would be the first postwar transfer of war potential to a Communist run nation. A World Bank delegation arrived for on the spot loan review.
A driver with no truck owned by Al Tiszkus allegedly drove through Kittery and across the Interstate Bridge with a burning load. He halted at the Portland Fire Station and calmly informed firefighters. the blaze was quickly extinguished.
A 10 year old Exeter boy, Wayne LaChapelle, was rushed to Boston Children’s Hospital with paralytic polio. He remains in critical condition on a respirator, with doctors reporting slight improvement. He was stricken during the weekend and transported from Exeter to Boston with police escort. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Henry LaChapelle of 26 High Street.
City Manager Edward Peterson prepared to present Portsmouth 1949 tax rate of 41.30, a 40 cent cut, to the State Tax Commission for approval after council approved a 62 729 supplementary budget. A parking plan debate with the Chamber of Commerce was postponed for a joint meeting next week.

Traffic to Maine surged 239 percent via the Portsmouth bridge, Hampton Beach forecasts a million visitors, and Cape Cod and Vermont chambers note increased business.
