A 21 year old Windham woman Marianne Forrest died as a car left Route 111 struck a stone wall and toppled a telephone pole. Police reported the fatal early morning accident. Public school teachers in Memphis threatened to honor picket lines of striking police and firefighters outside schools on the first day of classes.

Bomb blasts Laconia police station in New Hampshire
A pipe bomb exploded in a trailer annex at the Laconia police station shortly after a crank warning. Two officers in a rear room escaped injury as the blast damaged the detectives’ office and an evidence storage room. Three New Mexican adventurers in the Double Eagle II floated across the English Channel toward Paris after completing the first Atlantic balloon crossing.
