A Vienna cablegram says allied forces captured Pekin but Austria has no official confirmation. An official Taku despatch dated the 14th reports the attack on Pekin occurred Monday, with Rome having received the dispatch yesterday. The message also notes heat safety and unrelated notes from August 17.
Amid continuous artillery and rifle fire through July 17, French and Italian units report daily bombardments while other foreign properties are destroyed. Allied logs show progress and renewed hope as operations continue.
Despatches report Allied forces capturing Chinwen with light casualties. Chinese left 500 dead and fled toward Tung Chow and Pekin. British troops under General Gaseleo report heat, sunstroke, and horses dying after marching to Matow near Chiawan. Transport Warren sails with Ninth colored infantry for Taku via Nagagali.
From South Africa a British correspondent released from captivity says Mr. Kruger wants peace while fighting commandants push to continue the war and bar his escape if needed. Transvaalers hold ninety guns at Machadodorp with ample provisions. In Sranavat the China Gazette accuses American Consul General John Goodnow of complicity with the Chinese.
A despatch from Lorenzo Marques to the Daily Mail reports Mr Steyn has died from wounds received, with Lonpox dated August 16 noting the death.
Sir Claude MacDonald announces diplomatic contact with the Chinese. Allies set up headquarters at Tung Chow and claim a major victory over imperial forces at Tung Clow. American troops suffer from heat on the march to Pekin as Count von Waldersee visits the U.S. embassy and compliments President McKinley.
The Yangtze conference on the 7th ordered the allied march toward Pekin with Japanese leading and other internationals following. Russians British and Americans in line, French troops staying at Yangtien due to commissariat shortages, Germans Austrians and Italians returning to Tientsin. General Li Ping Hong reached Pekin with 10,000 men, met the empress dowager, then departed for an unknown destination. The note also reports a sealed cipher and that Shanghai’s Trotai sent a dispatch from Tsien on the 16th. Secretary Adee released the text, noting the embassy has been besieged since June 28.
A Russian regiment landed to protect the allies rear as forces near Pekin mobilize. Reports say allies occupied Tang Chow, with news of an attack on Pekin expected. Admiral Remey's dispatch confirms actions and upcoming operations.

Lord Wolseley, field marshal and commander in chief of the British army, delivered scathing denunciations at Aldershot yesterday. He claimed the thirty thousand men in the evolutions were unfit for abroad service, badly led and poorly taught. The remarks were heard by many distinguished officers.
London August 17 a youth about twenty was arrested at Leipsic yesterday. He confessed to being in conspiracy to assassinate Albert king of Saxony.
The National League games yesterday saw Boston defeat St Louis 3 to 1 in St Louis. Cincinnati beat Philadelphia 6 to 3 in Cincinnati. Chicago edged New York 2 to 0 in Chicago. Brooklyn defeated Pittsburgh 8 to 0 in Pittsburgh.
The battleship Texas of the North Atlantic squadron has moved to Casco Bay Maine for target practice and will be in Boston around August 19.
Cambridge Red Jackets capture the $200 first prize at the New England Veteran Firemen's muster in Waxham Massachusetts. Their record stands at 212 feet nine and three quarters inches, topping the field today.
Conductor Frank Burke of the passenger train from Boston jammed his right thumb in a car door jamb at Hampton on Thursday. He left the train for medical attention at Dr. Potter's office upon arrival in the city. Conductor John Small then took the train into Portland.

The Woman's auxiliary hosted a two day Chautauqua style event at Whan t augua hall with booths on each day of the week in pink blue white yellow green and lavender. Mrs Hartshorn and Mrs Garland oversaw Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday featured Mrs Emerson and Mrs Daw son. Thursday's white day was led by Mrs Stickney and Lillian Matherson. Friday's yellow day toiled under Mrs Lane and Mrs Folsom. Saturday's green day was managed by Mrs Severance and Mrs Palmer. Sunday lavender day was guided by Mrs Stearns and Mrs Wentworth. Music by the Stickney orchestra and readings by Miss Elizabeth Stephan provided entertainment. A presentation by A M Stickney gifted a pair of pink slippers and a cap to Marion Bowles, daughter of Rev J A Bowles. Mrs M H Jones of Methuen Mass returned home for her mother's illness. A Chautauqua service noted by Rev J A Bowles featured participations by Rev Dr Miller Otis Cola and J W Adams. Prayer by Rev W J Wilkins. Charles Tilton spoke on Character Building.
