In a divided Senate the plan to create a Welfare Department with a single head and three units faces strong opposition. Senate allies expect a 49 vote threshold to fail, while Taft and other Republicans denounce the reorganization. Democratic leaders push for a quick session as votes loom.
Rye town approved a budget increase raising the tax rate to 35.30 per 1000 to cover reduced state aid and added expenses. Town officials cited a 1,800 salary rise for teachers and 2,270 in taxes as major factors while district consolidation plans and nine teacher raises further impact the district finances.
Secretary of Labor Tobin told President Truman the nation should gain about 1,000,000 payroll jobs by year end with unemployment easing. Marine explorer Otis Barton called off his attempt to descend 8000 feet below the ocean. After three days of mechanical trouble and rough seas he was hauled to the surface from 2300 feet. He and William Beebe previously set the diving depth record at 3020 feet off Bermuda in 1934. Barton reported sightings of a glowing sausage-shaped creature, a bright eel, and a jellyfish during the dive, which ended due to power failure.
A 50 year old summer visitor, Mrs Leslie Clark, was hit by a car in front of the Maxwell house in Ogunquit Village yesterday afternoon. She was taken to Yor Harbor hospital in serious condition with leg and back injuries. Police say a Cape Porpones man stated she suddenly stepped in front of his vehicle.
Seventy Admiralty Village tenants rushed to file purchase applications before yesterday’s 5 pm deadline. World War I veterans have top priority. 75 ex servicemen expressed interest. World War II veterans have 30 days to file, with Sept 14 5 pm deadline before general public access.
Two motorists Ralph J. Cresta of 16 Cabot Street and Victor A. Walker of Worcester were fined and paid $6.82 in court costs after arraignment on charges of leaving their vehicles parked all night in Portsmouth’s commercial district. Walker pled innocent but was convicted after testimony. Cresta pleaded guilty. A third driver, Frank M. Kirby, tied to the Portsmouth naval base, had his car found parked on Pendrilaw Street and towed. City officials sought No Parking signs on a tree in the business district to curb overnight parking.
Betsy Doods of Wentworth hotel was hit by shattered glass while riding in a car on Wentworth road. Police say a ball thrown by a young boy broke the car side ventilator, injuring her eye. the boy's identity was not released and she was treated by a doctor.
Maj. Gen. Alden H. Waitt testified before the Senate Investigations Committee that Maj. Gen. Harry B. Vaughan asked him to prepare a memo naming officers likely to be considered for the army chemical corps chief post. Waitt said Vaughan spoke at a social gathering and urged him to give his opinion. He also said he dictated the memo to James V. Hunt, a Washington counselor tied to the matter. Evans testified Hunt claimed responsibility for Waitt's appointment and for other promotions.
Pulitzer author Margaret Mitchell died at Henry Grady Memorial Hospital after a speeding car struck her on Peachtree Street the previous night. She suffered a fractured skull and multiple injuries at age 49. Police charged driver Hugh Gravitt with suspicion of manslaughter. he had 24 prior traffic violations.
Gen Douglas MacArthur formally declines invitation to come to Washington to testify for Congress on the Far Eastern situation and U S arms aid to China. Secretary Johnson released MacArthur’s reply stating he should remain at his post in Tokyo to serve the national interest. No reply yet from Admiral Badger who was also requested to testify.
Visitors clash with Hooksett Street property owners in Seabrook Beach over middle of the street ownership and beach access. Police and state troopers quell the fight after drivers park to reach the beach. injuries reported on both sides and residents urged to seek court action.
Concord AP report: Daniel H. Dickinson, suspended highway chief engineer, faces Phinney’s evidence on toll road contracting. Gov. Sherman Adams and Atty. Gen. William L. Phinney will discuss findings with Dickinson, Lorimer, and firm Morse Parson Brinckenhoff Hal Sid MacDonald. No criminal action decision yet.
Yale researchers confirm a newly identified virus linked to polio like illness. Isolated during last summer's outbreaks in the Northeast South and Texas the virus appears to cause no lasting harm. Doctors may misdiagnose many polio cases as this virus with a short illness lasting about ten days and no permanent injury.
Concord reports 39 polio cases with one additional suspected case. Health officials note most cases are linked to Hunt. Dr Colby confirms unofficial reports of two more Manchester cases awaiting official verification. Quarantine on 70 people in a Merrimack summer colony is lifted after a young visitor contracted the disease.
A Portsmouth contractor named Task faced a quiet two year rezoning bid for Westfield park area. The planning board, after an unopposed hearing, delayed decision to executive session with no public speakers. A related request to rezone 948 Islington Street from residential to commercial was also postponed.
Yesterday afternoon two cars collided at the intersection of Middle and Centrss streets. Operators listed are Margaret Kent of Pines and Tsoo Whe Chu of Washington, Bc. No one was reported missing or injured beyond minor damage.
