In Gloucester Massachusetts a 15,000 person memorial observed as wreaths drifted into the Atlantic for five fishermen who died in the past year. Navy and Arkansas personnel joined Girl Scouts in the tribute, with local vessels forming a backdrop to the annual ceremony.
Newfields, youngest in Rockingham County, recently marked its 90th birthday without formal events. Originating from Newmarket and Exeter, it split in 1648, was named Newfelds in 1885, and benefited from Dr. John Brodhead's bequest to fund a public library. Today the town has under 400 residents, once a population center during Newmarket days.

The community mourns Jessie MacFarlane matron of the Mark H Wentworth Home for over 25 years after her Sunday morning death. A nurse trained at Portsmouth Hospital she led the Home since 1913 and inspired care and mercy to residents. Survived by one sister and three brothers in Canada services at North Congregational Church Tuesday at 230. Flowers omitted.
Shanghai Aug. 7 AP British charged Japan with a premeditated attack on British interests in Ichang where two British river steamers were destroyed and four crewmen killed while five were injured. The attack damaged Asiatic Petroleum Co. property as Chinese victims. H. J. Denyer, a Canadian, was gravely injured.
The nationwide anti crime drive opened with a 500000 word encyclopedia of crime before a federal grand jury in New York. Louis Lepke Buchalter tops the case as patrols guard witnesses in a sweeping probe with citywide offensives planned in Chicago New Orleans and Boston and possibly Miami Philadelphia and San Francisco.
Detroit August 7 AP A new strike threat loomed as a back to work march began in GM plants. Local 190 UAW authorized its officers to call a strike at Packard if sanctioned by the union international board. Election for representation to decide between UAW CLO or AFL set tentatively for Aug 17 by the NLRB.
Boston reports a five year old girl, Claire Brassil, crushed by a street car while attempting to save her, as her mother Mary Brassil suffered severe injuries. Patrolman George Brassil, away on vacation, is the father. Firemen freed the child after 20 minutes, and the mother was hospitalized with internal injuries.
