Miss Katherine Brooks Hurd, a summer visitor in Ogunquit Maine, was struck by a bolt during a severe thunderstorm on Monday afternoon and killed instantly.
Miss Hurd, 19, a Wellesley College student from Sherbrooke Canada, was struck dead by a lightning bolt on a beach near the Riverside Hotel. Two other young ladies were knocked senseless but recovered after medical aid. The tragedy cast a pall over hotel guests and nearby residents.
The Franklin Pierce veteran firefighters invite a good crowd for a social and spread next Friday night. Six year old Ralph Southard son of Mr and Mrs E M Southard of Munroe Street drowned in the upper Cocheco River Monday forenoon while swimming with other boys. Crowley, about twelve, tried to reach him but failed. Police and county officials recovered the body within hours, five feet from where he vanished.
