SAIGON AP government of the city at a standstill as fighting around Quang Tri nears intensify. North Vietnamese troops claim gains near the Citadel in Saigon’s heart while Marine units report efforts to cut off reinforcements along the Thach Han River with no significant progress.
Arthur Bremer was found guilty of attempted assassination of Alabama Governor George Wallace and sentenced to 63 years. The jury of 12 took 95 minutes to convict and assess penalties including 10-year terms for multiple assault and firearm charges. Bremer, 21, from Milwaukee, gave a brief remark citing society’s failure to protect him.
Negotiations between union and company officials began Friday to save 400 jobs at Spaulding Fibre Co. The talks aim to allow three divisions to stay at the Tonawanda plant while the company, employing 850, seeks concessions on planned pay raises.

Chairman Alphonse Corriveau said bids should arrive by the next meeting likely Aug 16 in Concord.
