New England reports show drownings common elsewhere, but New Hampshire beaches remain unusually safe for years. Beaches host thousands each summer with the Atlantic waters offering pleasure and security, inviting visitors to bathe at the seashore with confidence.
In a historic move President Roosevelt signals unity across industry by backing a moratorium on strikes and lockouts. He negotiates a three member advisory board with leaders of capital and labor to settle disputes as the coal mine war edges toward settlement under the industrial recovery administration.
A group led by Mauric Licup and including Rossi Paul Codos and Bargin began from Floyd Bennett Field at 4 40 a m to cross the ocean via Cape Sadie and the Great Circle route aiming for Karachi India with Scilly Islands weather guiding their landing. The record they seek to beat is 5349 miles set by Oswald Gayford and Gilbert Nicholette from Cranwell England to Walvis Bay Southwest Africa.
The Favorite Beauty Parlor will close on Saturday evenings starting August 5. The parlor located on Congress Street will observe these weekend closing hours.
Aug 5 Utles New York state troopers, including Capt Stephen McGrath, fought striking milk producers at Oriskany. Trooper George Marshall, 30, of Troop D Oneida barracks, suffered a brain hemorrhage after a blow with a stone or club. George Lewis, 24, of Troop HX, sustained concussion and lacerations.
Oklahoma City oil magnate Charles F. Urschel is shown returning home after a nine day abduction. Reports say a ransom of 200000 was paid, one of the era’s largest extortion sums. His wife and another couple were present during the incident.
Chicago August 5 Lieut Comdr Settle crashed The Century of Progress balloon descended in a Chicago railroad yard about 10 minutes after liftoff from Soldier Field It rose to around 5000 feet and struck a dent in the gondola but the commander was uninjured Ground crew worked to patch the balloon and a new trial was hoped for soon
Hollywood stars headline the musical at the Colonial with War Ten William Blondell Ruby Keeler Dick Powell Ginger Rogers and Guy Kibben among the cast. Music and lyrics by Barry Warren and Al Dubin include songs from 42nd Street and other hits.
Eugene B. Daniell of Somerville Mass was arrested on a charge of placing a tear gas bomb that closed the New York Stock Exchange. Detained by bomb squad detectives, the 26 year old lawyer admitted involvement and linked the stunt to his Fascist views. He cited a prior package at Mayor Curley’s Boston home as a publicity stunt for his movement.
Annual garden event to benefit the Navy Relief Society. The event gathers residents and striper colonies from Kennebunk Maine to the North Shore of Massachusetts. Held this afternoon at the grounds around the commandant's house, Portamouth Navy Yard, from o clock until 6.
A 38 foot auxiliary sloop named Wanderer burned nearly to the waterline between the Isles of Shoals and Whalesback Light. Capt W L Robbins and his son John were aboard. The fire, from a backfire in the exhaust line, spread quickly aided by gasoline in the engine pit. Coast Guard crews aided from shore and sea, saving the skipper and boat’s hull was towed to a dock. Personal effects were destroyed including $53 cash. Robbins said this is his first craft loss after years of towing pleasure boats.
An enthusiastic gathering at the Junior High school auditorium discussed the NRA. Sponsored by the Women's Community Council led by Mrs. Laura M Sumner, the event featured E Curtis Matthews of the Portsmouth Civic Council as chair. Gov John H Bartlett outlined government wage and work-hour policy, noting budget balancing requires temporary cuts and furloughs until the 18th amendment is repealed.
