Awards include aircraft carriers, heavy cruisers, destroyers and gunboats to major yards. Officials caution full impact may take up to six months.
Associated Press reports Copenhagen Police President Valdemar Mensen was found dead beside his bed at the Waldorf Astoria New York. He was part of a delegation of international police chiefs attending the Century of Progress expo in Chicago and a convention there. Death appears to be a heart attack.
In the dark near North Sheldon Vermont two Sheldon men died when their car left the road at a curve and crashed into a tree. The dead are Carl Woodtuff and Claude Greenwood. Injured were William Rudd Heland Dyaper and Wesley Orship. The group was bound for Montreal and they were treated at St Albans City hospital. Also noted is Army coach Major Bob Neyland winning 24 straight baseball games as a pitcher.
Washington reports the National Recovery Administration nearing success beyond expectations as officials say over half of industrial workers have received or are within reach of NRA benefits. New Jersey’s East Newark is cited as the first town at 100 percent NRA participation, while shipyards win millions under a three-day week plan to reduce unemployment.
Rochester authorities report Dr Charles H Mayo ordered guards to shoot first and explain later after a man allegedly tried to force a nursery entrance during an attack on the Mayo family estate. The three children, ages 2 1/2 to six, slept in the nursery while nursemaids and guards patrolled.
The steam lighter Reliance, a longtime Portsmouth bound sand and gravel ship, was sunk in a northeast of Boslon Ights area after being burned to the water’s edge. Owned by Boston Bandart Gravel Company, the craft was deemed unfit for further use.
