Washington August 3 AP Republican policy committee to meet with GOP senators to decide civil rights strategy and anti inflation housing measures. Taft cites rule change as only path to limit debate. discusses poll tax constitutional amendment and possible Senate banking action.
A cellar fire heavily damaged Mayer P. Alkon’s Middle Road residence today. Flames spread to the first floor before firefighters subdued the blaze. An oil barrel blocked the fire’s path but did not ignite. Fire Chief George T. Cogan estimated the loss but noted the cost of repairs will be substantial.
The Portsmouth Police commission finished a routing session in city Hall last night signing bills for uniform trousers. Commissioner J Verne Wood joked about panty cost differences while Chairman Drew Dexter suggested some men have bigger waists.
CONCORD AugustA bill for consolidating New Hampshire's 10 county jails is eyed for the 1949 state legislature. Raymond K. Perkins of Concord, Merrimack county solicitor and head of the County Officers' association, said the plan is among several studies. Other proposals include a uniform annual report system and changes to county fees and non support or illegitimacy actions. The association has submitted these ideas to committees for study and Perkins is unsure of final recommendations. County government consolidation was debated at the recent constitutional convention amid arguments over abolition and related reforms.
Political dissension flared at Star Island as a government official blasted Columbia University sociologist Professor Goodwin Watson during a week long conference. Mason, a former Illinois senator and counsel, accused the talk of attacking democracy and aiding communism. Watson did not respond, and the affair unsettled Star Island officials.

A Portsmouth youth, Bernard J. Barteau, 18, was assaulted on State street last night by two men who fled. One struck him with a club and the other punched him in the head. he could not identify his attackers. He was treated by Dr. John J. Doyle.
