Canadian and United States sections of an unfinished 236 mile pipeline to relieve oil tanker shortages were welded together at the border in a ceremony with officials from both nations. The $8 million project would carry crude oil from South Portland Maine to refineries near Montreal Quebec starting this fall. Over 40 miles of 12 inch pipe have been laid since construction by Standard of New Jersey began less than two months ago. Officials said the pipeline would deliver about 33 000 extra barrels of oil daily to Eastern seaboard cities, easing a transportation shortage. Initiated as wartime emergency to offset tanker diversions for Britain, the pipeline will stay in operation after the war. The Canadian delegation was led by G D Howe and Abelard Godbout.
