Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the residence of Pierre Roy and a barn with 20 tons of hay and farm equipment in Berwick Maine. Roy and his wife escaped. damage estimated at 10 000 dollars. Firemen faced water shortages as lines were down after a storm and pond water供 would not suffice.
Edward Hickman died at his son John’s home in Seabrook. A native of Accomac County Virginia he was 87 about to turn 88. Hickman helped raise the battleship Maine in Havana Harbor and served with the New York police department for years. Funeral services are set for Thursday at Smithtown Methodist Church.
Two cars were stolen in this city with police tracing the thefts to Morris Salden and W Ernest Mac Leod. Salden reported his car from School Street with registration 75,330, recovered after a Dover road crash. Mac Leod’s Boston owned vehicle, driven by an intoxicated youth, was taken from Vaughan Street and wrecked near Frederickson farm as the suspect asked a passerby for a ride toward Portsmouth.
Concord, Aug. 1 One life was lost last week in a motor vehicle accident in New Hampshire and 124 persons including 13 children under 15 were injured in 128 mishaps according to a report by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Howard Bachelder 38 of Manchester died at Auburn. Through July 29 34 fatals this year vs 43 in 1938. Last week 15 licenses revoked for intoxication 10 for reckless driving with many suspensions. Major causes listed include inattention speed excessive left turns on wrong side reckless driving and backing. Seven accidents involved children and in four cases drivers were intoxicated.
Simon P Thompson a 70 year old of Portland died in Biddeford hospital from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Kennebunk shortly after midnight. His wife Ida M Thompson was in critical condition and their daughter Loretta 15 escaped with minor injuries. A light truck carrying four people ran off the road jumped a ditch and struck a tree before overturning.
The Portsmouth Fire Department plans Tuesday August 8 outing for local children at the central fire station. 487 tickets were issued Monday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and up to 10 p.m. tonight. tickets continue daily 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. until the event. A 12 foot wooden platform with hand rails is being built for the outing. Community interest and cooperation are requested to help make the event a success.
Paul Isenberg, 16, of Dorchester and Richard Nexon, 16, of Brookline, were hospitalized after their car collided with a pole in dense fog at York Village. Both sustained broken left shoulders and were treated at York hospital.
