Suicide at Rye Beach Deepens Mystery

James Hayes, 23, of Boston and Salem, died Friday on Kina road near Rye Beach in a death by own action case that authorities deem highly unusual. Hayes, educated and employed by a major Boston insurer, left his aunt’s home and drove about 50 miles before ending his life on the Ocean Boulevard. His brother from Salem offers no motive and says there is no reason he should take his own life. The case continues as investigators review the circumstances.

Bahai Convention at Enacre to Be Held in Nashville

Ledger Robbery Suspects In Payroll Theft Near Salem

William J. Booth, one of four inmates who broke from Rockingham County jail, is suspected as a masked bandit in yesterday’s $4500 payroll theft from the L. E. Southwick Leather Co. of Peabody. The loot was seized en route in a taxicab abandoned in Charlestown. Booth’s photo was circulated, with Kennall Blas and two others sought or recaptured in Grockcon. Booth has a long police record including a 1924 auto theft confession in Portsmouth.

Police seek Thomas Mannion in wife’s brutal murder

A brutal murder occurred yesterday near the Swedenborgian Church of New Jerusalem on the Little Harbor road. Helen Broust-Jette Mannion, 22, wife of Thomas Mannion Jr, was killed with a razor, her throat cut from ear to ear. Authorities believe it followed a domestic dispute as the estranged couple walked together toward Little Warrior road. The infant daughter Katherine was found unharmed in a carriage nearby.

Woman Sentenced for Large Swindle in Immigrant Aid Case

Mrs Martha Witlgerald, known by many aliases, was sent to the penitentiary today by Judge Rosal at Sessions for swindling immigrant women and mothers out of large sums. Police say the crime involved depriving vulnerable individuals of between 4000 and 10000 dollars through deceit and false promises.
