Avery convicted killer Arthur Patrick was sentenced by Recorder Goff to death by electric chair at Sing Sing on May 5 for the murder of William Marshall Rice. An appeal to the Court of Appeals may stay execution. Patrick and his wife Addie Francis traveled to Ossining and to Sing Sing. his beard was shaved and he was placed in the death house.
London dispatch reports Commandant Kritzinger, captured December, tried by court martial on four murder and cruelty charges, acquitted and treated as a prisoner of war at Pretoria.
Virginia City Mont April 7 One of the richest gold strikes in the state has been made in the Kearsarge mine at Summit. The vein is more than a foot in width and is reported to be almost pure gold. The property is owned by Charlies Millard son of United States Senator Millard of Nebraska.

In Washington today the conference report on the war tax reduction was adopted 36 to 20 as passed by the Senate. The House version of the Chinese exclusion bill was approved after amendments tightening the measure, expanding to exclude Chinese by birth and mixed blood, and a contested provision banning Chinese sailors on American ships was finally adopted by a vote of 74 to 1 after initial rejection.
A St Petersburg despatch dated Sunday reports a third attempt to stab Gen. Treposs, prefect of police in Moscaw, as he rode in a carriage. A student allegedly tried to stab him but wounded a policeman instead. the assailant was arrested. A wider conspiracy is suspected.
The navy department reports the gunboat Marietta has sailed from Colon for New York after guarding American interests there. The cruiser Philadelphia remains at Panama on the Pacific side awaiting developments.
In Gilroy California a railroad station box left by a rancher ten years ago was opened revealing the remains of a man and a woman. The box had laid at the station after the rancher disappeared shortly after leaving it. Local authorities investigate the ties to the missing man.
Special town meeting held in Fliot April 7 to decide on the closed District No 3 school. About fifty voters attended and Moses B. Good Ing was elected moderator. The action was to keep the school open due to small attendance.

Andrew Jackson Swinerton of Stoneham Mass and Miss Sarah Edith Brown daughter of Mr and Mrs Free man Brown of Austin were married at three o'clock Monday at the Methodist parsonage by Rev Thomas Whiteside.
