About three hundred per diem employees at the New York navy yard joined a protest against two house bills granting an additional fifteen days of unpaid leave. They warn that passing either bill could reduce chances of permanent employment due to government labor costs, and say they are satisfied with the current fifteen days' leave.
In San Domingo March 381 the town of Baralen on the south coast was attacked and captured by revolutionists after a fierce fight with forty dead or wounded. A government gun boat bombarded Baralen, troops landed, and the town was retaken. The revolutionists retreated to a nearby stronghold. The minister of war pursued them with troops to restore order. Dominican Congress has decreed martial law and suspended constitutional privileges.
President Amen of Phillips Exeter Academy announced a gift of 3000 dollars from Miss Susan D. Perkins of Concord in memory of her father. The funds establish a scholarship for needy pupils.
A gas explosion in the Neilson mine of the Payton Coal and Iron Company at Dayton Tennessee today left fourteen men dead and ten missing after coal dust ignited the blast. The measure would permit book exchanges between libraries at the pound rate of postage creating a central clearing house for a general circulation at low cost benefiting educational institutions and students while reducing duplication of costly reference works.
After a conference committee failed to agree on a plan, Hayes candidates were elected to town offices in Kittery including Town Clerk Clarence M. Prince and Selectmen James R. Philbrick John A. Phillips and Franklin Maley. Other posts filled: Superintendent of Schools Charles C. Smith Town Agent William Burrowes Town Treasurer Mark W. Paul and several officials. The annual Easter hall of Court Rockingham No. 6 Foresters of America was held at Peirce hall on Monday evening. Members with wives and sweethearts filled the hall for a lively event led by Flour Marshal Ro Capstich and Mrs. William Copan. The program featured music by Philbrick’s orchestra and a concert before the grand march, followed by a 16-number dance sequence and a 30 minute intermission with a large group in attendance.
Edward Johnson John Langer and Charles Cilley returned to Newburyport with a wreck tale. Their schooner Iona, bought for fishing with about 300 dollars sunk in her, dragged anchors near Isles of Shoals then struck rocks at Prebbie s Cove and broke apart. The men escaped ashore with loss of gear.
