Park Street Schoolhouse windows near completion. Century Road Club run June 8 draws local riders. Miners Loan and Smelting Co incorporation filed, capital 1 million. Bicycle accident injures Charles F Whittler. Gerrish returns home after illness. Osborne of Portland to wed Pittsfield bride June 6. Yarmouth patent grant for a trap nest.
A local society note corrects a misidentified couple. Mr and Mrs Harry H Verrill are at Grand Beach for the season while Mr Ralph White at the Fal mouth desk was recently sick and has fished. Hiram W Ricker arrives at the Falmouth. Dr Henry P Merrill leaves for Detroit to attend an railway surgeons meeting then California. Rev Lewis Malvern moves to 106 Brackett street. prominent locals Burbank Higgins Heath and Ricker are noted at the Falmouth hotel.
Caribou May 20 A local Old Home Week association has been formed with officers including President Mrs W C Spaulding and Vice President E Rutile. Fremont Small L E Tutte and Rir South Windham electric service announced for Memorial Day travel to and from Portland leaving Preble Street at 10 and 20 minutes past each hour.
Memorial day observances in the city include graves decoration at Western Lincoln Garfield Calvary cemeteries by Bosworth Thatcher posts and a 1:30 p.m. parade led by Major Charles Collins with National Guard units and local cadets. Memorial services and concerts follow at City Hall with Reverend Bowley Green and Hon. Frank W. Robinson presiding.
Today features two morning and afternoon baseball games between Tufts and Bates, and P A C against Bowdoin. A gun club shoot, postponed Deering and Portland golf tournaments, and wheelmen meet with plans from Bath to Gurnet’s, plus evening theatre shows at Jefferson and Casco Athletic Club exhibition. Holiday hours affect Portland post office and Eye and Ear Infirmary.
On Memorial Day deliveries occur by carriers in the morning with box collection times at 7 11 am and 6 pm. Carrier and General Delivery windows operate from early morning until 9 am and 1 pm respectively.
From the law court a series of rescripts discuss enforcement of lawful procedures during riots, assignments of accounts, and attempts to transfer properties. The decisions favor plaintiffs in one case for 401.87 and discuss notices, evidence admissibility, and trespass after license revocation.
At the Ivanhoe lodge meeting a committee was appointed to arrange a Pythian memorial service for Tuesday evening June 12 at Castle hall. The observance will honor members who died during the past year with music and other attractions arranged by the committee, and the idea may be adopted by other lodges.
Secretary Bigelow of the Old Home Week association received a Buffalo circular from Acting Secretary A. A. Rice of Sons and Daughters of Maine. It calls Maine natives in Buffalo to meet at 644 Ellicott Square Thursday evening to form a Maine state society. A list of 150 names from Dover, New Hampshire, residents is also noted.
Dean Sills dislocated his shoulder after slipping on stairs at Saint Luke's parish house. He received prompt medical aid and is expected to be laid up for several weeks. The East End Yacht Club began a Brunswick cruise with about five yachts and 50 people, including several ladies, hearing Gen. Chamberlain's Memorial Day address.
The Outlook club elected Mrs. Charles F. Jones as president and Mrs. J. F. Phillips as secretary and delegate at its annual meeting held with Mrs. Charles S. Flower. A musical program entertained attendees and a June field day was announced. Interest grows for the Literary union field day at Checkley, Prout's Neck on Saturday June 30.
The final season gathering is scheduled for Thursday May list at p.m. at the residence of Mrs. Chas J Chapman on Spring Street. All subscribers to this mission are urged to attend and reports from the Pittaburg annual meeting will be read.
The fare is five cents each way today to Forest City landing Peaks Island on the Casco Bay line. Bleamer departs Custom House Wharf nearly hourly through the day and evening.
Report from St John notes morning arrival of the revenue cutter Woodbury followed by tug Georges Creek towing coal barges A B and C. Only notable fish arrivals were from small boats totaling about 5000 pounds.
Scarboro mourns William Shirley Libby age 33 11 28 who died at home after caring for his invalid father. Promoter owner of Portland and Prout's Neck Express he won town esteem and trust offices. Funeral service at Congregational church led by Nonesuch Lodge K of P. Also notes death of Mrs E Matilda Bruce aged 24 6 in Scarboro.
The police committee meets Thursday to decide on appointing special officers for summer resorts and possible local force increases. Last year four specials served Peaks Island and three at Long Island with others at Western and Eastern promenades, Lincoln Park, Deering Oaks and Riverton from June to mid September. The plan, likely repeated, includes replacing the late Parris Webb at City Hall beat. spring police inspection undecided. summer uniforms to be worn June 1 if weather permits.
College events run June 9 to 3 with multiple ceremonies. Junior Prize Exhibition on June 9 at 8 p.m. Baccalaureate address by Rev. Hanscom on June 10 at 5 p.m. Convocation June 11 at 10 a.m. Class Day and 25th anniversary events at 2 30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Alumni baseball game June 12 at 10 a.m. and corner stone laying at 2 30 p.m. Receptions and a June 3 gathering follow. Commencement June 3 10 80 a.m. Dinner at 1 p.m. Alumni meeting 4 30 p.m. and reunion at Kathadin Club later.
