Halifax May 23 Ten thousand dollars worth of fishing gear was destroyed by Sunday's gale at Magdalene Islands. The government fisheries intelligence bureau also reports mackerel shoaling off the Nova Scotia coast.
London reports say Lord Roberts closes on Transvaal frontier with infantry 38 miles north of Kronstadt by the Rhonoster river. Boers retreat across the Vaal with heavy baggage, some 12 000 men and 14 guns. Pretoria papers moved to Lydenburg as foreigners flee. Canadian artillery earns praise for pivotal actions at Mafeking and Gametree fort amid relief advances.
London reports Lord Hoberts states on May 24 that Boers fled overnight from a strong river crossing on the Rhenoster. Ian Hamilton's force pressed from Heilbron while cavalry threatened their right and rear, destroying bridges and railway. Over 30 Free Staters surrendered with 300 rifles, 100 horses, and ammunition. Yeomanry repair teams returned to Bloemfontein after completing duties.
May 18 dispatch reports Mafeking alive with elation after a decisive victory. At sunrise British positions remained intact while three Federal forces inside bore were surrounded and offered surrender. Commandant Eloff misread the retreat and believed the town under his mercy. By noon a lull followed breakfast as supplies were requisitioned for the fighting line.
Washington May 23 The House passed the judiciary committee extradition bill without division after a rancorous debate. Democrats objected to language broader than Cuba and sought a recommitment. The body also allowed Ways and Means to frame war revenue measures and set a sine die adjournment for June 4. Payne argued treasury figures show bond refunds would wipe out the year’s surplus.
In Washington on May 25 the Senate heatedly debated amid sharp oratory. Two major speeches dominated the session, Pratt of Connecticut replying to Bacon of Georgia on Cuba finance investigations, while Boomer of Wisconsin weighed in on the broader political stakes as campaign issues surfaced.
Alfred Cole, a 5 year old maniac in East Stoneham, bit two women and tore at his body. He leaped and screamed, biting his wife’s arm and self, until bound by villagers and handed to doctors. He was eventually sent to the insane asylum after a previous outbreak.
The adoption of the resolution prompted a sharp clash as Mr. ae denounced it as political capital while continuing yesterday's address. He argued with Mr. Hale of Maine over government conduct in insular possessions. The exchange between two top debaters drew Senators Representatives and a crowded gallery. Spooner plans to continue his speech.
Auburn May 28 Democrats held a tense caucus to select delegates for the county convention. A sharp split pitted Joel Bean Jr and Tasous Atwood as county attorney nominees. Atwood delegates won narrowly amid the factional clash.
Rendall Dresser withdraws boosting Sheriff George E Huskins by acclamation. Ti W Oakes withdraws as probate judge candidate, Col F M Drew to be renominated unanimously. County attorney race remains between incumbent George F McCann and W B Skelton with uncertain delegations. Lewiston leads Skelton and Auburn favors McCann.
Riots continued in St Louis as a Cass Avenue car was halted to remove a barricade. A mob fired on the car injuring Special Policeman Duncan K McRea who died en route to hospital. Eddie Manz age three was shot in the leg and is feared fatally wounded. Conductor R B Hodge is hospitalized with head injuries. Negotiations with transit officials were not reopened as expected.
The Boston forecast for Thursday calls for fair weather with light variable winds and Friday expects partly cloudy skies with possible light showers and light variable winds. Washington outlook for New England mirrors this with partly cloudy Thursday and showers Friday, mainly southerly winds. Portland reports include morning barometer around 20.05 and evening around 20.00 with clear skies, and temperatures ranging from a high near 60 to a low around 48, plus a maximum wind of 12? seen.
In Constantinople on May 2, Charge dAffaires Griscom presented a new note to Tewfik Pasha demanding a prompt settlement of American indemnity claims. The note, more precise in terms, surprised the Porte which had hoped the matter was postponed or abandoned. The U.S. government pursues a quicker response after prior indulgence failed to satisfy Istanbul.
Heilbron dispatch reports fighting since Sunday as three British divisions sweep toward Bethlehem. Boers strike British rear but are repulsed. Col Broadwood arrives with cavalry, attacks the railway commando, routs them, captures 114 wagons and prisoners. Burghers race to surrender.
