In Gardiner on May 14 a sizable portion of the woolen mill weavers walked out after a Madison foreman was discharged for alleged cause. Strikers from Madison demand reinstatement. others cite wage differences from running two looms versus one. The mill continues with replacements as talks proceed.
In New York on May 14 the Central Labor Union proposed forming a cooperative to produce medicine and supply it at lower prices than the American Iso company. If carried out, unions would market the product directly to buyers, challenging the current supplier.
Striking suburban railway workers and officials from the Suburban Hallway company and the transit company held a conference in St Louis on May 14. A basis for settlement was not disclosed, but union leaders claimed full recognition. Police dispersed crowds on the transit system as talks continued with no immediate settlement reported.
Chicago, May 14. The Methodist Episcopal general conference temperance committee, chaired by Samuel Dickie of Michigan with M. H. Johnson of North Dakota as author and advocate of the anti-canteen law, adopted resolutions condemning President McKinley's stand and Attorney General Griggs decision. The report, from a sub committee, passed despite a motion for a minority report after a stormy two hour debate.
The general conference rejected a push to elect two colored bishops and a petition to appoint a colored bishop. It upheld a 1896 declaration recognizing colored leaders in the south, seen as a defeat for that movement. The itinerancy committee, by 89 to 91, favored ending the current time limit for preachers.
Washington reports the state department seeks data on rising German colonies in South and Central America cited in Monroe Doctrine discussions. Officials note colonies preserve German customs, operate quasi autonomous governments, and may form a “German Ireland” within republics, prompting a broad ministerial inquiry.
Secretary Root told the military affairs committee the army reorganization bill would increase force size by about 6 000 troops over years, with a focus on staffing artillery and fortifications. He warned most fortifications lack proper garrisons or relief, citing General Miles on 75 seaboard stations where only 43 are garrisoned and none adequately relieved. He noted about 17 000 troops in the U S with artillery a minority and pressed for more men and funding.
William McCloud of Prince Edward Island and John H. Grane of 62 Bowdoin Street Langor were severely injured when the Maine Central locomotive 195 capsized at the new round house site near Dutton forest. McCloud suffered facial shoulder and chest burns. Grane injured in head back and hip. They are expected to recover.
The Bangor Theological Seminary trustees will discuss moving the seminary to Brunswick at their annual meeting on Tuesday. The Bangor opening ceremonies will begin the commencement exercises. A fire in Marinette Wisconsin left 200 homeless as the town burned, destroying most structures and the railroad station. Insurance will cover much of the estimated 200 000 in losses. The blaze swept through lumber yards and mills in nearby areas.

In Augusta Georgia on May 14 William Willis a Black man who shot Alex Whitney was taken from officers near a train to Atlanta and killed by a mob near Grovetown twelve miles away. The mob hanged him in the woods after multiple attempts, bullets were fired at the body and a warning placard was displayed. Governor Candler had ordered state troops to deter violence and Judge Brownson mobilized the grand jury, but the lynching occurred before measures could stop it.
Lynn Massachusetts celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of its incorporation with church bell chimes a 17 gun salute and citywide events. Public schools held historical exercises while citizens delivered escort addresses. The day ended with theater programs and a large bonfire on High Hook as visitors thronged the city.
Boston officials prepare a welcoming committee of aldermen and citizens to host South African republic officials visiting the city. A special committee will bring them from Washington and Faneuil Hall will host a reception this evening after a meeting of prominent locals to finalize arrangements.
