Portland weather bureau records a day of observations with barometer readings, thermometers, humidity, wind direction and velocity, and weather state. Reported temperatures include a maximum and minimum, with notes on hazy conditions and snow.
The Senate heard that Senator Foraker in charge of the Porto Rican tariff bill would push it to a vote starting tomorrow, with a conference to follow. Senator Hanna denied any deal behind the bill and urged investigation into an attributed statement. The Alaskan code bill was debated with amendments approved, while the Porto Rican measure awaited further action.

A fire damaged the printing establishment of Orrl Hentzemann at 46 2i4 Seenseas in Boston Mason 26. Fire crews responded promptly, with unknown extent of damage and no injuries reported at press time.

Washington March 24 The Republican Senators spent over two hours in caucus seeking an accord on Porto Rican legislation. They discharged the harmony Committee and resolved to proceed with the general bill as is, hoping for a speedy Senate vote. Several names were noted as likely or unlikely to support the amended tariff plan, with talk of cross‑party votes to secure a majority and swift action to send the bill to the House for decision.
Five well dressed men staged a breakfast time theft at Healy's on Litzy sixth street and Columbus avenue New York. While one man talked with the cashier another crawled under the railing to the cash drawer and swiped $1000 in cash and checks. The theft took place over five minutes before discovery and police say suspects are on their trail.
Rev George H Young pastor of the Lawrence Unitarian church resigned his post to take effect in September. The congregation deferred action tonight. His resignation follows salary reductions tied to parish unrest after his pro Boer sympathies. He has led the parish since 101.
In Manila on March 26 natives disrupted a Tagalog language play titled For Love of Country at the Tagalog theatre. Police arrested the theatre manager and the play’s author, proprietor of a rival newspaper warned to curb radical utterances. American authorities had banned the production.
London dispatches say military observers puzzled by actions for the relief of Mafeking. A force of five to six thousand soldiers under Lord Methuen is engaging Boer positions at Warren. Reports note Gen French did not head off the Boers and that Boers’ peace envoys may come to this country.
