Early returns from the first Missouri Congressional district show Democrat Lloyd leading Republican Clark by about 5000 votes. Final results await further counting and certification.
In Washington the House faced sharp clashes over Speaker Reed’s policy and the Republican majority. Democrats Richardson and Simpson led the attack while Henderson and Grosvenor defended the majority. Three special orders passed, including a government printing appropriation and navy transport bills, as the House adjourned amid procedural battles.
Canandaigua New York June 1 snow fell this morning for about an hour marking the first day of June with a rare wintry burst in the early hours.

Portland Savings Banks pay 25 803, express companies total 4 981.08, an increase of 183 over 1896. Mortgage and building associations owe 202.05.
In the annual field day contest in Lewiston on June 1 the class championship winner posted 46 points while other classes scored 33 30 and 29 points respectively. The event highlighted strong performances from the 1897 1900 era competitors alongside the main winner.
A Welsh West Virginia report says five White children aged twelve ten six four and six perished when their residence two miles from Keystone burned last night. Enemies are suspected as the house was set ablaze while J W White and his wife were away. Bloodhounds will be used to track the killers.

At Atkins Arkansas a race clash in Lee township leaves two or three dead or fatally wounded as a mob beats a Negro, Reason Egg resists arrest injuring a constable, and a man named William Jaylord is beaten to unconsciousness and dies. Authorities issued warrants for three or four Negroes who attack white men Jesse Nickels and J. R. Hodges. The outbreak alarms the region and further violence is feared at any moment.
United States cruiser Marblehead returned to Key West with the tug Dauntless in tow charged with filibustering. A Marblehead lieutenant joined Dauntless and twenty five Cubans were found aboard. Little ammunition remained and two rifles were recovered as the crew reportedly threw others overboard. Spanish Consul Fernandes was attacked by a crowd but survived.
Havana June 1 A decree issued by Captain-General Weyler dated May 27 announces military operations in eastern Cuba and enforces the January 30 decree in Puerto Principe and Santiago de Cuba. It orders cultivation zones, closing stores in unfortified towns, concentration of peasants, and destruction of undefended resources, as in other provinces. Citizens have one month to comply.
The Havana based El Comercio, via Key West, denounces United States policy toward Spain. It accuses the U S of leniency toward men who burned and dynamited the country, urging Spaniards to stay firm against a policy of clemency and pardon.
Canea Crete last night insurgents attacked Hierapetra with French and Italian warships bombarding insurgent positions causing notable losses. Athens reports representatives of the two armies may meet today to sign a further armistice extension.
