Dr. Baker and Rev. Dr. Fenn announce July lectures at Williston and Free Street Baptist churches on topics spanning science religion and reform. July 8 to 23 feature sermons on family, world affairs, and spiritual stories led by Dr. Wilson. Also reported are a disabled ice wagon accident, probate guardianship hearings, Overseers of the Poor figures, Union Mutual block progress, and local post office year-end work, plus travel notes and political delegate arrivals.
Tomorrow's Sunday Times features a graphic recounting of the great 1875 city fire that burned several steamers and two large wharves. The piece notes striking similarities to the recent Hoboken disaster and recounts ten incidents from the Portland fire that drew local discussion this week.
Rev J R Boardman, new pastor, of the West Hind Congregational Church will speak at the Young Women's Christian Association Sunday afternoon at 4 30. All women cordially invited.
On the Westbrook line a drunken passenger, Daniel Griffin, assaulted conductor H. E. Chute and track oiler Thomas Gallant after refusing a transfer and extra fare. Griffin bit the conductor's thumb, pursued Gallant with stones, and was later arrested in Little Falls for assault. He admitted drinking and awaits a hearing before Judge Til.
Yesterday at 10 AM the Portland Fresh Air Society led 347 children and their mothers on a steamer trip to Peaks Island. Thomas S Laughlin funded the banquet, Goding of Casco Bay Steamboat provided free transport, and Miss Crie addressed attendees at the Gem Theatre hall before a fish chowder lunch and subsequent entertainments.
Personal items note Mr. Edward W. Kent of Portland visiting Dover then returning for a longer stay with Mrs. Kent accompanying him. Hon. William W. Thomas heads to Sweden, Mrs. Thomas currently in Europe, and a large group boards a Paris-bound Christian Endeavor excursion from New York.
John Tl Fellows of Windham Centre died at his home Saturday morning June 80 after a long illness in his 80th year. Born in 1820 in Wakefield New Hampshire he moved from Limerick Maine to Windham Centre in 1866 and served as town treasurer selectman town clerk and two terms in the legislature 1876 1877. Survived by son Dr J A Fellows and daughter Mrs A K Hawkes funeral held Monday at his residence conducted by local ministers. The second obituary notes Theophilus Morgan long resident of Portland died at 9% years after public speculation about Morgan heirs and subsequent poverty.
The Horatio Wall arrived just before 2 PM from New York with many passengers and a fine voyage. The Cumberland reached Boston at 4 PM with a large number of passengers. No other fish arrivals occurred and a 2000 pound mackerel tally was reported. Excursions are planned on all steamboat lines tomorrow.
