W L Boothby a young sportsman believed from Covington Kentucky is thought to have drowned at Spencer Pond after his overturned canoe was found. He had been in the Spencer area for two weeks and has not been seen since last Saturday.
Dispatches from Shanghai Che Foo and Tien Tsin sketch a bloody scene at the legations with Boxers and imperial troops entering the yard. The Emperor Kwangsu is said to have died by poison and the Dowager Empress survived after taking poison. Officials debate foreign retaliation as cities brace for a possible wider clash.
Washington on July 4 reports Consul General Goodnow warns that allied forces must impress Chinese with resources to avoid more trouble. His despatch is the only official China news today while the State Department accepts reports of the German minister to Pekin's death as beyond question.
New York reports Lemuel E. Quigg resigns as president of the Republican county committees and General F. V. Greens is selected to succeed him in the leadership role.

The agricultural department weather bureau lists yesterday's readings at 8 pm with varied data across locations. Entries include temperatures around 76 in New York and 74 in Albany, wind directions NW and SW, and a mix of rain, clear, and cloudy conditions in several cities including Washington and Jacksonville.
Kansas City July 5 William Jennings Bryan of Nebraska was unanimously placed in nomination for president on a platform opposing imperialism militarism and trusts and advocating free coinage of silver at 16 to 1 The convention fought a long battle over the silver issue and imperialism before approving Bryan as the Democratic standard bearer with a strong pro 16 to 1 plank and a thunderous audience reaction.
The draft platform shifts emphasis away from silver to imperialism as the paramount issue while the convention settles on a vice presidential candidate. A quick decision is expected tomorrow though the nominee remains uncertain.
Convention Hall in Kansas City buzzed with thousands of eager attendees long before the second day’s sessions. By 10 o'clock, about 80 minutes before opening, streets leading to the entrances were packed with hopeful delegates and spectators awaiting the day’s events.
