London dispatches recount harrowing scenes from Beijing as foreign legation guards endure heavy fire. Reports claim Chinese forces press toward the British legation while defenders, including women and children, face scarce food and rising casualties. Runners are killed trying to relay messages amid brutal fighting near Tianjin and walls around the capital.
The local street car union's executive committee backs the grievance committee's deal with the transit company. Attorney Joseph W. Folk calls the settlement honorable for both sides and says the strike is legally ended and should be ratified by the men.
The year and a half old son of Dennis McGormick of Brewer fell into a rain barrel while playing near the home and drowned today in Bangor.
Muenster on July 8 reports Baroness Von Ketteler mother of the late German minister to China has been sent a telegraphic condolence from the Emperor. The message expresses deepest sympathy and gratitude for her son’s faithful services.
The Shanghai Times reports a Pekin edict issued June 26 to enroll Boxers and troops for expelling foreigners, effectively declaring war. A Shanghai dispatch notes the Taotai announced no notice would be taken of Imperial decrees starting June 21 as Prince Tu an seized power that day.
A Shanghai special says renewed heavy fighting continues at Tien Tsin and rumors say Vice Admiral Seymour may be wounded. The British Foreign Office official adds little new but notes a June 29 consul telegram reporting the allies burned three arsenals and seized vast stores.
Washington July 8 The State Department learns from Consul General Godnot at Shanghai that Pekin unrest stems from an insurrection rather than government action. The Chinese government is not implicated and viceroys south of Pekin unite for neutrality as foreigners’ safety is seen secure across three fourths of China south of the Yellow River.
Washington July 3. Doubt persisted about the extent of casualties reported by Admiral Kempfit as American forces patrolled Tien Tsin.
Last night the navy confirmed a cablegram detailing American losses with 87 wounded and 10 killed among landing forces. Four previously reported deaths were Boatswain's Mate Thomas, Gunner’s Mate Henson, Apprentice Bremen, and Landsman Sevenson with McCalla's detachment. Six Marines under Major Waller died near Tientsin during the assault and march. Names and enlistment data for the fallen include Corporal James Francis Lannigan of Brooklyn, Private John Miller of Philadelphia, Private John Hunter of League Island, Private Edward L. Provensaal of Boston, Private J. H. Nichols of Mare Island, and Private Martin H. Morris of New York.
Berlin July 8 Emperor addressed German marines sailing for China vowing vengeance for Baron Von Ketteler and missionaries. He urged unity with civilized powers to plant the German flag over Pekin and dictate peace, stressing religion and protection of fellow believers. Washington July 3 Chinese minister Wu reports viceroy Nan kin asks foreign forces stay away. Tianjin situation described as desperate with foreigners ordered out and Chinese trenches near the walls.
