Washington January 28 It is decided that Mr Choate will be accredited as United States Ambassador at the court of Edward VII His old credentials authorized him to the Queen and his new post is at Windsor February 2 Secretary Hay charges Choate to represent the U S government at Windsor funerals no special embassy will be dispatched due to time constraints Lord Pauncefort to become ambassador to the United States with credentials signed by the Queen
Lawrence January 8 The council overcoming a deadlock reaches a compromise with William Bartley and Charles Choate agreeing to share the presidency for the year Hartley will serve the first half and Choate the second part the committees will be equally divided.
In Boston on January 2 a thief grabbed Miss Dora Harrington as she walked home with a friend. A burly assailant knocked her to the ground, seized her pocketbook, and fled. She sustained no serious injuries.
The Chicago municipal council refused to adopt a resolution of sympathy on the death of Queen Victoria. Alderman George Duddleeton introduced the measure, and a suspension of council rules was required for its presentation. The matter was referred to the judiciary committee for later report.
The Daily News reports Li Hung Chang sending a teale gram to Sheng the tactal stating that the Manchurian representative presented to Tseng Chi nine peace conditions. The terms would hand Manchuria to China but give Russia control of the province and pledge support in war. Li Hung Chang ordered Cho Ha Pau to lead negotiations after rejection of those terms.
The Lewiston city council voted to accept Andrew Carnegie's offer to erect a 50000 dollar building for a free public library and to appropriate for running expenses. Citizens are expected to donate a site for the building.

Much work on the topmast gaff and frames for the midship section proceeded while steel deck beams began arriving to ease tension on the project.
A slight fire broke out this evening in a tenement on Auburn street in the West Kind area, Boston, causing a busy response by local firefighters and residents. No injuries reported. Damages appear limited to smoke and minor flames within the dwelling. Fire crews contained the blaze quickly with no spread to adjoining units.
