At yesterday's Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting a Dirigo Telephone representative said the company would likely start installing a plant in Wards Sand at once. The city had granted rights last year, which do not expire until February 6.
Senator Frye tells a Washington correspondent that he pressed the Treasury and was told by the lighthouse board secretary that the contract for a Portland harbor light has been let and work will proceed rapidly.
A new corporation registry entry announces the organization of the Indian River Gold Mining Company to mine and trade various metals with capital stock set at $1,000,000. Certificate approved January 0.
A special meeting of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the Portland Electric Light Company pole erection in parts of the city with a set time limit of March 1 16. The Dirigo Telephone Company petition was discussed. Aldermen voted six to three to allow withdrawal. Additional poles on Hanover Street and Beacon Street were set for hearings February 9.
The city printers convene on Sunday February 4 inviting all printers including non members. Boston district organizer Henry McMahon will address topics of interest to printers. Also reported is the finished summer tourist rate session with 75 attendees and election of Warren J. Lynch as chair and George A. Wells as permanent secretary. In league play Massotte defeated the Quakers with high totals across five players to reach 1386 while Lakers beat Hokinsen 1201.
Alger V. Currier will lead a new School of Drawing and Painting in the Society of Art rooms on Congress Street beginning Monday at 1 o'clock. Currier, an established artist with two Boston Museum scholarships and two Paris Salon exhibits, offers systematic instruction in drawing from models and elementary art study for Portland readers seeking thorough training.
The 173rd Cumberland Conference of Congregational churches met at Williston with strong attendance from area churches. After devotion, communion was led by Rev. A H Wright and Rev T M Davies. A North Deering Congregational meeting reports favorable outlook for spring construction of the new church edifice. Mrs Mary A Taylor donated all sand needed, a cash gift valued in the hundreds. Rocks are hauled, a builder’s counter purchased, and Myron K Moore of Deering Center designs the plans. The parish fund stands at 1100 with no outside subscriptions yet.
On Tuesday afternoon authorities investigated scattered debris along Back Bay and confirmed the remains were portions of a female body previously dissected by medical students.
