Snow removal on Congress street continues, and municipal court hands down sentences for intoxication and other offenses. Civic club and Little Women meetings, plus upcoming Hossini club program and a new Twenty First Century club formation, fill local schedules with speeches, eulogies, music, and social gatherings.
Thatcher Post No 1H G A K members enjoyed a fine supper Monday after a well attended meeting and newly installed officers spoke on various topics. At Virgil Clavier school Elmo Robinson age fourteen delivered a memory recital under Miss Annie A Holmes showing notable tone and pedaling skills. The program included Soldiers March Happy Working second and more pieces with plans for a repeat recital next week.

The Portland Board of Trade held its 17th annual meeting with large attendance. Officers were reelected including President Boothby and Treasurer Fobes. Reports showed improved finances, many new members, and strong port activity though repairs and new buildings were noted. Public trust in the board’s work and plans for grain inspection and expansion were discussed.
A Chestnut Street church service drew a large crowd with Rev Luther Freeman delivering a forceful sermon. The First Universalist Parish annual meeting elected officers. a memorial plan united clubs to aid the Temporary Home, with a room expansion funded as a free-will offering to Mrs Joan W D Carter at 534 Spring Street.

A Portland letter carrier, Fred K Mitchell, sentenced to 18 months for mail robbery, was pardoned by the President. Sheriff Pearson announced the telegram from Attorney General Griggs. Mitchell, ill with consumption, reacted with joy as jail officials waited for formal papers and delivery from federal authorities. Representative Amos Allen had pressed for the pardon for weeks.
